  4. It’s got a cop motor, a 440cubic inch block, it’s got cop suspension, cop tires and it’s a model made before catalytic converters so it’ll run good on regular gas.

    Hello,

The nice memories of family camping days lingers on all of us that were dragged to those events in our "kid" days. Those 59 Chevy station wagons were big vehicles. (4 doors, long roof for racks and necessities, etc.) The room inside easily fit a family of 5, with the kids ranging from the stair step 12, 10, 8, plus mom and dad. This photo reminded me of the family photo album thread back in 2016. Camping was still in fashion, sometimes pulling the family motorboat for more excitement.

Recollections from 1959…from my wife about the trials and tribulations of family camping at the desolate, Salton Sea in Southeast California.

My mom and dad took us "camping" in Yosemite in those cool, canvas tents. He was not much as far as actual tent set up and cooking style of camping. But, he loved the outdoors. My brother and I learned our camping knowledge from the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts that has lasted in our own family tent camping adventures in the 70's.

Somehow, that has lasted into this latest generation, as my son has taken our grand daughter on many family tent camping adventures with his friends and families.

    Hello,

Camping with the family back in those days called for a family sized 1959 Chevy 4 door wagon. Everything was packed, tent, stove, cooler, cooking stuff and of course, tons of food. A small outboard powered boat was towed, for fishing? Salton Sea? Corvina was plentiful…(but Tilapia still thrives, today) We were able to just float around and play. Our mom usually maintained the cooking while our dad did the fishing and fake hunting. When other people would drive up to the campsite, the big shot gun came out and big booms went out over the water. Needless to say, the nearby camping site became empty again. He was a mean one, Mr. Grinch !

Addendum to the post 59 Chevy wagons:

    Hello,

Here is a Matchbox 1/64 model of the 59 Chevy wagon. I had to pretend to be the GM factory and make three models for the brother and two sisters as a memorial to their dad that was 98 when he passed away last June. The recollection was not a white wagon, but a pinkish color.

In looking up the 59 station wagon color chart, the closest one was a “satin beige” that was slightly pinkish. I am sure their dad would not like it if the station wagon was called “pink.” My wife picked out the color and I pretended to be a custom, GM assembly line.

I made the mistake of finishing one of the station wagons in two coats of white before the word came down from the pedestal that it was not white but a light pinkish color. (So, back to the disassembly and sanding board.) The final models were pre-approved before the final finishing touches were put on. The big canoe bit the dust and turned into the family’s orange, canvas tent, that in reality, was so heavy when folded.

Also, the ever present green Coleman pump, white gas, stove went everywhere for cooking. These camping items stood the test of time as 20 years later, our family of three used the same orange tent and green Coleman stove on our Mammoth Mountain/Lake Crowley trout fishing, camping trips.

The orange canvas tent leaked at the seams and the canvas soaked moisture through the material. The green Coleman stove worked well and reminded me of pumping the handle on our Moon Equipment aluminum gas tank that was in the cab of the 671/SBC 40 Willys C/Gas coupe.

The Big Sur and Half Moon Bay ocean, cliff side on a cold blustery day and night was a big contrast to the Mammoth Mountain camp sites. But the smell of bacon and eggs in the morning and tons of trout (Mammoth Lakes) in the evening made it all worthwhile in the outdoor camping locations.
