  3. Your photo is Falling Water in real life, I showed a model of it so you could see the whole thing without trees around it - it is a pretty incredible house, but I don't think I'd want to live there. I clicked the link above, and the photo of the house and car are in the neighborhood it seems - how cool.

Rootie, is that Eddie Sachs in the Cheesman sprinter leading Foyt in the Erickson car? Is this at Dayton?

Yes it is Dayton, March 58. Eddie finished 2nd in the Cheeseman car and A.J. was 3rd in the 33.

Thanks. I've never figured out the whole story on Hollis "Bill" Cheesman (I have also seen his name written as Chessman in old articles). He was obviously a longtime racing mechanic and even rode with Deacon Litz in the 1937 500. Other than the fact that he owned a successful sprint car I don't really know much more.

A great 1961 photo of Chuck Stevenson in the ex-Bryan Metal-Cal laydown. George Salih built this car to be an improvement over his original Indy winning car but it never really worked out. And if you look to right in the photo you see a line of Firestone tire technicians. The man at the back, holding the tire gauge with hose dangling down, is Del Neal. Del was the brother-in-law of Firestone Racing chief Bill McCrary. He also taught on the side and I took a technical drawing course from him and I got to know him well over the next 30 years or so. He really gave me a lot of insight into the events of his era in racing. He passed away in recent years and now I am always thinking of some question that I would like to be able ask him.

As said previously a Frank Lloyd Wright design. It was featured in one of the episodes of "This Old House".
Very interesting but had some structural problems from memory.

Not to hijack this thread; however, the design is spot on. The problem was inferior building materials and outdated building practices. Would not be afraid of building any of Mr. Wright's designs today. Just my two cents. Now back to the fun.

Not exactly. From my visit to Falling Water they admitted he fought with the builder. The builder wanted more rebar and support.

I don't know much about him either. His real name was Hollis Cheeseman and it seems he also owned a Maserati that he entered in the 1940 Indy 500 with Henry Banks driving (dnq).
In the mid 50s he bought the #25 sprinter from the original owner, a fellow named Michalbus (spl.?) out of the northwest. It seems that Michalbus was a Mormon and the hierarchy in the Mormon church took a dim view of auto racing back then and "encouraged" him to divest his racing operation.
Cheeseman died not too long after Sachs won the Championship in the #25 and then Paul Leffler bought it from his estate. I believe that is Cheeseman leaning on the car in this shot. img448.jpg

My info says Hollis Cheeseman was based in Indianapolis but there could be some relation I guess.
