Growing up I used to believe my dad when he said it was safe to ride outside the car. Looking back at this photo, I'm not sure anymore...

  5. Not different than how the chimney is built in a lot of NEW "fancy looking" houses. Outside coming up through the roof is a big impressive fireplace chimney of brick or stone which is built on ceiling joist below. Couple of years ago local codes were changed when all that weight fell on a fireman during fire in Texas.

1 more car I promise, Rex Winter

"Mrs. Shotbang with her 4 children she delivered herself. Husband broke his foot. About time baby was to be born they ran short of coal and bed clothing, Mrs. Shotbang had to take care of the newly-born baby & the rest of the family, cutting fence posts for fuel. The family almost froze; no mattresses on the beds over the winter, only some quilts over the metal springs."

The fortitude and determination of this era of rural folk never ceases to impress me.

That's not saying much for Texas, their engineers, their builders or their inspectors...Or maybe it says a lot about them.
