"Mrs. Shotbang with her 4 children she delivered herself. Husband broke his foot. About time baby was to be born they ran short of coal and bed clothing, Mrs. Shotbang had to take care of the newly-born baby & the rest of the family, cutting fence posts for fuel. The family almost froze; no mattresses on the beds over the winter, only some quilts over the metal springs." The fortitude and determination of this era of rural folk never ceases to impress me. Williams County ND, 1937 ~
