We could have a hell of a lot more fun on that dirt than horses.

It is not Salt Creek… that point break is about a mile north of this Headlands Point and property.

    Hello,

The photo is a very good shot at the beginnings of the trailer park along the coastline of northern Dana Point. Back then it was in the Orange County property files, not Dana Point or Laguna Beach. (Dana Point did not become an official city until 1989) The owner of the property was Otis Chandler from the Los Angeles Times Newspaper company. Very big time back then… His family wanted to develop it for a recreational area for vacations.

The center of the whole development was a nice tennis court set up and other club facilities. It had names from the locals that called it various different ways. The point in the far left is called Strands Point. A good surf spot but totally hidden from public view. This tennis court trailer park was also not in the public view. The tall cliffs hindered any access other than sliding down the dirt trails of the cliff side to the beach.

This nice looking Ford Truck is parked in the lot on top of the current developed cliff pubic parking area. It is above the lower beach area where the trailer vacation development was once private and out of sight. No one could get close to the edge of the clifftop to see down the hillside. A very long trail + road was graded into the trailer park/tennis court. There were areas to park right along the shoreline and use the facilities, but one had to be a member of the private development.

The Dana Strand Club, (the official name) a mobile home community located in Dana Point, CA

    upload_2023-12-3_3-25-12.png Strands Tennis Club

Our family was fortunate to have friends whose dad was the tennis pro at the Strands Tennis Club. He got to park in the lot next to the facilities. When he took our families to the beach for an all day event, we surf fished from the shore and enjoyed the sunshine along with the empty beach. It was if the beach was our own private waterline property. Ha! No, I did not go surfing as the property at the time was always guarded and those folks looked down on surfers walking along the rocky shoreline and sandy waterline. Although, no one owned the “mean high tide” mark.

    Note:

The blue water was ripe with plenty of fish. But the weighted sinkers and hooks were usually in trouble as they were reeled into shore. Why? Those fish know the bottom structure and if they swim back and forth, they know the bottom reef angles away from shore and if the lines get tangled with the sharp reef edges, they get cut and freedom for the little fishes. We did catch our share of fish to be barbecued for dinner. But, we did have to change and add new leaders/sinkers, to almost every other fish that was brought to shore.

When we did surf at the Strands Point prior to meeting the tennis pro’s family, we had to park at the real Salt Creek Point (north about a mile walk) on the waterfront parking spots and walk down the long beach to be able to surf the rocky point at Strands. It was about a mile+ walk along the water’s edge. We would only do that walk if we could see waves coming in at the point. Salt Creek Point was the premier surf spot along this portion of the shoreline. So, it would take a perfect peeling point wave or set of waves to make us walk that distance down the sand to Strands.

The private gate and road leading to the compound down on the sandy shoreline.

The Dana Strand Club was a mobile home development on the Dana Point Strand, established in 1956 by the Chandler-Sherman Corporation. The Club grounds included 90 lots overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The site was accessible only by private road and included a private beach. Club amenities included a restaurant, clubhouse, tennis court and swimming pool.

Salt Creek Beach to the left of the photo around the point. The Strands Surf Spot to the right on the tall cliff point.

The Dana Strand Club officially closed its doors on February 24, 1989.

Since then, the empty area from PCH to the edge of the clifftop remained empty until the county began developing the upper areas and made a public access sidewalk to the beach. Now a giant developer has created specific lots for custom ocean front homes at varying high prices. (all below the yellow 40 Ford pickup photo location) It also has a spiffy name: Strands at the Headlands.

Me and the neighbor kid built a "club house" out a bunch of old boards and used nails we kinda straightened out. It ended up in a tri-angle shape cause that was how the trees grew that was the "foundation", the flat roof leaked pretty bad as the used tin had lots of nail holes. Dad came and looked it over and bragged how great it looked! We ended up calling it a speed shop that we stored our down hill hotrods , complete with rope steering, big and little wheels and axe handle brakes, we were stylin' for 9 year olds in 1960!

Thank you for the correction. The photo was identified as Salt Creek by the Orange County Archives, so I just added the caption.

    Hey SS,

That is ok, those old photos were probably archived by a college kid that went surfing one time in Dana Point. The two cliffside points do look similar. If one stands at the lifeguard tower at Salt Creek Point and looks toward the Strands Point Headlands, it would look similar to someone from outside of the area.

In looking back, we started surfing here in 1961 and in those days, we drove down a road to the beach. Then, we would come to a gate and have to pay a quarter or so to the guys that lived in a tiny house on the lower cliff side. They would lift the gate pole that was across the road that ran all the way to the point. Now, anyone who paid, could actually park along the road or around the cliff point, the road was a little wider to allow more parking. (The road is still there, but now only for lifeguards and the million daily beach side walking exercise folks.)

Sometimes. if we arrived very early in the dark, the gate would not be locked and we could lift it up and drive in around the cliff point. Those days became the norm, saved us money and we could stay all day. The gate guard guys never knew we drove by them without paying, as we drove by in the dark without headlights on. The area back then was all green bushes and dirt. No homes or for a long time, no hotel on the top of the cliff. Just fantastic waves...
    upload_2023-12-3_8-35-45.png
The waves at Salt Creek Point were great. Just down the way to the North was a place called "Middles" that was in front of the current snack bar. Then farther North towards Monarch Bay, is a place called "Gravels," due to the little pebble gravel bottom and rocks spread within the sand. this whole long beach area breaks all year around from any swell direction. a premier surf spot along the coastline, for sure. I surfed there for at least 40 years in some great waves.

If one comes out West to spend a vacation along the coastline, the Ritz Carlton was built high on top of the Salt Creek Point cliff top in 1983-84. From that location, the horizon view is endless. YRMV

  19. in school i was always lost when it came to chemistry  The only thing i found was this:

ICA stands for Ignition Control Additive (former Shell gasoline additive)

The following was released by Shell on Jan, 15th in 1954:

    New Additive Cuts Out Pre-ignition
ALL Shell Premium petrol will ir future contain what is termed ignition control additive (I.C.A.). Distribution of the new petrol through the pump started last Monday.

The chemical employed is tri-cresyl phosphate and its effect is to convert lead compounds deposited on the surface of the combustion chambers and the sparking plugs into lead phosphate complexes which are of higher melting point and greater electrical resistance. This prevents shorting over the pine insulation and the burning of the lead deposits which normally cause preignition, pinking and rough running of petrol engines.

The I.C.A. virtually fire-proofs the deposits, preventing them from glowing. Shell Petroleum, the parent company of Shell-Mes and B.P., Ltd., is responsible for the research behind this technical advance.

Shell motor fuel is now benefiting by two years of extensive trials on Shell avialion spirit. Shell containing I.C.A. has been on the market in the U.S.A. for some seven months and it has been found to clear the road for engines of higher compression ratio, gi vine increased power and greater economy.

With an engine which has been in service for some time, it requires up to 400 miles' running completely to convert the lead deposits.

SOLVENT ADDITIVE FOR ESSO rlA CLAIM that Esso Extra motor spirit has been greatly improved by introducing naphthenic solvent oil i• made by the Essa Petroleum Co., Ltd. This additive has important solvent properties on the type of gummy deposit which may form on valve sterns and in the piston-ring zone.

    ELECTRICS TO SAVE PETROL

ECONOMY in the use of petrol by municipal transport is being urged by a committee of Ramsgate Town Council, who have approved a proposal to employ electric street orderlies. These will cost £460 each, enable staff to be cut from 24 to 16, and save £2,000 a year.

It is suggested that they can also be used for other purposes, such as conveying materials from the works depot to jobs en route to streets to be swept.

FREE (II24,639) TRAVEL CONCESSION passes available to k.■ persons over 70 in Liverpool total 36,674 and the holders make journeys to the value of £124,639 a year. This was reported to the transport committee last week, and it was decided not to extend the concession to persons of 65 and over.

    VIENNA FAIR

E`OR the first time for many years, the I Vienna Spring Fair, from May 1421. will include an international display of cars and commercial vehicles, as well as accessories.
