vintage fuel system. OT?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by buffalo bill, Nov 1, 2009.

  1. Help please!!

Need some help to I.D. the fuel device on this 28 chev.
Looks like gas enters from tank inti right top of canister
and out bottom to filter then carb. Line from top left of
canister appears to allow intake vacume to inject gas vapor
    into manifold.
    Any info or ideas?
Looks like a great MPG improvement device.
    Bill.

  4. That's your fuel pump.....a vacuum tank. Engine vacuum pulls fuel from the main tank into that tank and the fuel is then fed by gravity to the carb.

JohnnyFast is right. There's a float inside that shuts off the vacuum when the reservior is full and lets the gas run to the carb. On some cars you can hear the idle raise and lower as the valve opens and closes. There is no fuel or vapor going directly to the manifold, that line is for vacuum only. The Tee on the top of the tank is probably to supply the wiper.

Thank you both for your prompt replies.
Guess we can consider this cannister closed!

I'm not convinced that needle valve on the bottom of the tank is rated for gasoline.
Looks like what they use for water in icemakers and swamp coolers.
