Hot Rods Using a WWII oxygen as fuel tank

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by roll of the dices, Feb 29, 2016.

  1. Hi everyone, thank you ahead of time for any help you can provide.

Has anyone use a WWII oxygen tank as a fuel tank? Any feedback? Very interested on any ideas and advise that you can share.
I want to use one for my project but here are some of the concerns I have.

*I plan to install it on the bed, behind the rear window. Is sun heat an issue with this set up?
*I am told it only holds about 10 gal....I am thinking of cutting and welding two tanks together to increase capacity. What's the best way to weld these tanks? is the outside diameter on these tanks pretty consistent?
*Wondering where and how should I weld the gas filler neck....any suggestions which one to use?
*I've read these tanks are stainless steel others say aluminum....which is it?
*I would like to make it work with electrical '36 ford ford fuel gauge...which sending unit should I use with depth of tank? or should I ditch the electrical and go hydrostatic type?

Again, thank you for help. Sorry if some of the questions might be basic but so is my knowledge of these things.

  2. The tanks I have are stainless, I think while they are apart I would put a baffle in them and have them tig welded together. I would think the diameter would be the same.

Similar to those old SS beer kegs that people use from time to time?

Mr. Chevy, are those original mounts that came with the tank? I've seen a million of those tanks but never an original mount.

Aren't those tanks made of spiral wound metal? Once the outside bands are removed they become a slinky??
I have know to be wrong, a lot

Yeah those seams appear to be wound. Cheap disposable tank at the time. Anyone that has used them, are they still tight 70 years later?

The spiral strip you see is just there to control expansion under pressure.

So is this a spun metal tank, solid wall? Are the caps welded on?

They are stainless steel and they hold about seven gallons.

  11. They are pressure vessels designed to hold O2 under pressure. Gasoline sitting in the sun will expand, but if properly vented...

Do you know what pressure? If they're for compressed oxygen they're probably supposed to have a quite high pressure, much higher than a sealed fueltank in the sunlight may reach.

  13. thank you all for the feedback and comments so far.
Here are some pictures I found of what is said to be an original mounting bracket....you be the judge

  14. Here is the one I am putting together based on those pictures....keep in mind, I am barely learning how to work in metal...including welding :)

I believe mine are original to the tank. when I got this it had wheels and a handle to convert to a mobile air tank.

Here is one I welded together for Homemadehardtop57's Cyclone roadster. Used the straight center section of one tank and added it to another tank for extra volume. The diameter of the two tanks was consistent and the bands are on the outside for stiffening , I'm sure they had a lot of psi in them as an oxy tank . I made the feet and Jerry supplied the filler neck. I dont know how much it holds but it fits nicely in the ModelA. 1 016.jpg

Well, it looks good in Jerry's car but I don't know about sitting exposed in a truck bed. It looks kind of dumpy to me-diameter and length just not quite in proportion. But, it's not my vehicle, just my opinon.
