Technical Underdash AC unit restoration

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 1930artdeco, Jun 6, 2024.

  1. I have a 1965 Ford unit that needs to be restored. Has anyone found a shop to do this? I found 'Original Air' that says they do it but am looking for recommendations.

    Thank you,

    Mike

    Hello,
When we needed service on our old under dash A/C unit in our 327 powered 40 Ford Sedan Delivery, we tried to fix it by our selves with a call or two. but, we eventually had to take it to a normal A/C repair shop. The unit was standard stuff and the connection set up was as if it came from the factories. So, the local A/C shop had knowledge and did a great turnaround to get our 327 powered Sedan Delivery back to us asap.

The cost to repair and replaceable parts are dependent on your set up and problem. If there is a place that can do good work, then forget the cost, get it done. Trying to find a shop that will discount the given price is worthless. Would you ask the plumber to install or work for cheap if your plumbing water heater or toilet was in need of repair or replacement? Good work does require rewards. So, go with that local company to do a good job. YRMV

Our repair was fast and great. It was cold and worked for the next 5 years. Later on, when we got another car with A/C, we took it to the same shop and they fixed it right for 1000s of miles of "cold, +cool road trips" up and down the coast of California in those early days... YRMV

    note:
If you are handy with A/C parts and problems, the standard for old hot rods is usually Vintage Air. They have a good reputation from their history in hot rods from a long time ago. So, give them a call for parts...

  3. Yep going with Vintage Air for the compressor/dryer etc. But the evaporator that I have needs a full resto and I am not sure a local shop will be able to restore the chrome/plastic/case/motor etc. Maybe in Vancouver...

    Hello,
At least you can contact Vintage Air to see if they have the parts necessary, if the local place does not. Plus, Lynden to Vancouver is a wonderful drive on any route, as far as we are concerned, having taken it a couple of times on our journeys to the PNW on our extended road trips... So, if you can get the parts in Vancouver, it would be as if we took a drive up the So Cal coastline to Malibu to watch the Summertime waves hit the shoreline in about 1.5 hours.

    Good luck...
