Hello I was offered a 1405 carb with a metering/jetting kit labeled 1487. Is it possible to tune a 1405 Edelbrock carb with the kit that is sold for the 1406? I read enough conflicting news that I cannot decide if I should buy that carb with the kit. Any advice will help a lot - thanks!
I don't think you can use the 1487 kit parts with a 1405 carb. The #1479 is the kit for tuning 1405 carbs: https://www.edelbrock.com/performer-series-calibration-kit-for-1405-carburetors-1479.html If the 1405 is available for a good price, you can always re-sell the 1487 and buy the 1479.
The 1405 and 1406 are similar carburetors. Suggest looking at online tuning guides from Edelbrock, and seeing what components are in the kits. Depending in which way you need to go, you may find that the pieces you need are in that very kit. I know between my buddies and my kits, we had enough varied pieces to tune each other's carburetors. From the description on #1487 kit: *This kit is designed for the 1406, but can be used for the 1405 or other Performer Series Carburetors. Use the Calibration Chart in the images to the right, or refer to the Carburetor Owner's Manual.
Yes you can, but you won't necessarily be able to get all ( or maybe any) of the tunes listed in the manual. But I expect you can get somewhere close by looking at the sizes of the rods primarily and jests and applying a bit of math. The effective jet size is the area of the hole in the jet less the cross sectional area of the rod, like a washer, or an anulus to use the correct term. When I was younger and cleverer I devised my own spreadsheet to determine the effective jet size when using a dogs breakfast of rods and jets I had accumulated. It worked well. Chris
I have just checked on the Edelbrock site and found there are some similar parts like the 5 different springs and one pair of rods. But the 1479 kit for the 1405 has some more parts which are not included in the 1487 kit. Until now I don´t know what I would need as I don´t even have the carb. The application would be on my blown (142 Weiand) flathead with 255ci and Edelbrock 1125 heads. I guess I would need a rich stting to compensate the blower.
Possibly but not necessarily. I would install a AFR to tune, even with the little blower. If you don't want to use a AFR gauge then you will have to figure out what the engine wants and likes. These carbs are very tunable.
I have AFR gauges for each cylinder bank on my test rig and will add another pair of these gauges to my car to test the settings under load once the engine is installed. So I guess that the 1405 is alright for my application? If I ever need different rods to what is in that kit, so be it.
