I got a choice of two similar tranny's offered to me.
One I am told is out of a Ford and the other from a Dodge.
I am told they are basically the same tranny, which from the outside I would agree.
Which of the two is a better choice for installing behind a Cadillac flathead engine, or finding a clutch for it as I have the Cadillac flywheel.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated... 10 232861935_1872007699646782_340028139509007077_n.jpg 10 235793596_1872007849646767_3263253006414057547_n.jpg

  2. Russ, looks like the input shaft length varies greatly between the two and the spline count which could present some installation issues. Are these truck transmissions? Bodies look large to me. Are you fabbing your own bell housing adapter to the Cad?

Look like heavy movers to me. If you don't mind skipping first gear, you need room ( Undercarriage space ) to carry them.

I am told the Ford is from a F150, but that is about it.
I have a Lasalle bellhousing that bolts right on to the Cadillac engine as both Cadillac and Lasalle used the same basic block.
If it is not a good match/choice, I'd be glad to know before I commit to either one of them...
I am not really a tranny guy for stick shifts.

I would think an r 11 borg Warner would be a better choice, it could be less money in the long run to make it work. Are you putting this in a car or truck?

This thread, and the Advice are most helpful. Good luck with your build.

  7. They look like New Process 435's. Great truck trans.....would not be my first choice for a hot rod though.
What are you planning to use it in?

  8. Granny geared truck trans.
    Great for pulling
Sux for General hot rod shenanigans
If they’re free, sell/trade for a better trans, unless maybe that caddy engine is going to be used like a truck (hauling logs, coal, dirt, rocks,....)

I think from the vibes come from the audience that this would be best left alone.
I have the engine and bell housing and I just figured when this opportunity presented that maybe it was time to consider a tranny.
Kind of collecting parts when they come up, yet not really building the project yet.
I've found from past experience it was better to grab stuff while it was avaialble and easliy had since the alternative can be frustrating and sometimes expensive as time passes by.

Thanks to eveybody for their imput, I do appreciate it more than you may realise.

If you find a LaSalle transmission for a sort of reasonable price, grab it while you can.

I have a three speed side shift trans from a 1940 Cadillac that I will give you. It will bolt right up to your bellhousing. They have a pretty long tail on them, but it would be a better choice than the two pictured.

  12. Russ, I would take up that offer in a minute from Ebbsspeed. Floor shifts are available for the older Cad trannies. I have the templates to make the brackets if you ever need them.

Fiftyv8 Ebbs has your solution, pass on those truck trans and get the side shifter from him. In the long rub you will be better off IMO.

The long shaft with fine splines is a Mopar trans.

Definitely passed on the truck tranny's now.
I will take stock of all the comments and touch base with Ebbspeed.
