Yeah, the good old days when Ma couldn’t hang the clothes outside because of the smoke and ashes from the steam locomotives. Then there was rationing during WWII- restrictions on gasoline, tires in almost nonexistent supply, some foodstuffs hard to get.
Sure, the junk yards were great but many didn’t have two nickels to rub together anyway and their tools were usually limited also.
