Riverside Raceway 1959
One of the many advantages of being out in the country-side during the 1950s-60s. Trackside seating from start to finish. The exhaust noise accentuates as the race cars zip by in the valley. Hardcore early drag racing So Cal style… But, there weren't any homes in the area to complain about the noise.
Riverside Raceway 1959 the cliffside seating.
It was most exciting to go to a huge area that was empty, but those racers were making outstanding runs on this raceway dragstrip. It was one of the biggest drag races of the year with the big names from all over the USA.
Valley Home Service, Speed Sport Roadster, Bobby Langley, Valley Home VS. Tommy Ivo Twin, to name a few, plus a screaming 1941 Willys Sedan from the Gas Coupe and Sedan Class. (Willys Sedan, unnamed or identified…anyone? DECEMBER 1959)
Lewie Shell messing with the carbs in front of his muffler shop. In the photo at the top he is in the LA store he was most noted for, he bought, sold and traded used engines and speed equipment in the 1950’s.
