Traditional 50s.... Plumbing? sorta O/T tech help request

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mike Zenor, Oct 25, 2004.

  1. Hope this isn't too far off-topic, but I've got an obsolete '59 Crane two-pipe bathroom sink faucet that needs a rebuild. I've looked everywhere on-line for parts and/or replacement units with no luck. I've talked to at least 4 different local plumbing techs who said they couldn't rebuild because it involved machining.

Anyway, anybody out there know either (1) obscure/obsolete plumbing supply places offline, or (2) places that do cheap machining for brass/ stainless etc.)?

  2. I woulda thought you would have a good architectural salvage place in Chicago.

There's one not too far from me with a couple thousand sq. ft. of salvaged bathroom stuff, amongst everyting else. If you're not in a hurry PM me or e-mail me a photo and I'll have a look next time I'm up there (might not be for a couple of weeks).

Might want to check out Liz's Antique Hardware in LA. The web site barely scratches the surface... I could have spent days prowling...

You may try architectural salvage in Kansas city on Southwest Blvd. They have TONS of stuff and know there stuff if you called them up. I think that they are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. I am not sure if they have a web-site or not. I guess you could GOOGLE them.

Oh yea, when I read the title, I had a flashback to the plumbing issue of 01' or was it 02' on the board. I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard.

Oh yea, if you want to send me a digi pix of it with the info, I can stop by the place in KC for you, if needed.

Luck of the draw on prices there too. I went there to get some old casters to fit an oak office chair. Dug through the drawers and drawers of casters to find a matching set of three, dropped them on the counter and was told twenty five bucks for three worn casters.

Later that year I paid the exact same amount for beautiful cast bronze furnace vent I had been looking for for over a year and a half. The place is full of delusional kooks.

And I thought Crane only made cams & valvetrain stuff...
    Learn sumpin' new every day!

  8. Any small towns nearby?
Or maybe on the outskirts of the big city?

Find an old wooden floored hardware store.
Had one in the SoCal small town I lived in.
They had everything and then some.
Not in blister packs either.... [IMG]

  9. Thanks all - I'll post a pic of the faucet later.

I've already tried Salvage One here in Chicago, no luck. Most of their stuff tends to be victorian, not mid century.

That's exactly what I've been finding out... Victorian = well collected and big bucks.

mid century is considered garbage by most of those type of people.. and antique places never sell it either.

    hey, possible business idea [IMG]

I'd say to just ebay a NOS faucet.. That's kinda what I've been doing around the house.. It's spendy on there, but nowhere near as much as a restoration warehouse or antique store.

I bought a couple art deco sconces for the shitter, and paid 1/10th what they were going for are my local resto shop.
