What memories you bring back. Early 70's pitting on a AA/FA direct drive with a Hays slipper clutch. It would haze the tires all the way down the track. I can not believe how you have produced such a fine hot rod. The dark thing sounds like a Chrysler on gas with a blower! Please be very careful.

Thanx Jim, no real upgrades planned other than paint, freshen the engines and a gear change. I'm pretty happy with it myself although it's hard to win a race LOL :D

The Twin is getting down to the bare frame finally for the 1st time in 3 years. Timing was perfect as 3 out of 4 ring gears are loose on the flywheels ........looks like the welds "just let go". The Ring Gear teeth still still show no signs of wear the 10,000 RPM clutch looks great!

Three of the four were loose? Interesting! I wonder if it was minute differences in the manufacturing process causing them to "push" each other around.
So whats the plan from here on out?
Edit: I just noticed you don't have vibration dampers on the front of the cranks. Maybe the vibrations transmitting through the cranks helped loosen them? I'm sure someone smarter than me can figure this out.
In any event, its good to see your car again Rocky. Looking forward to progress.

Funny, I was just reading a thread on vibration dampers. Lot of good info on there that I had never even considered before. You might be on the mark there.

After 3 years and some engine issues during this period I'm not concerned about the ring gears.........4 new ones and away we'll go! :D

Well then, I only have one question...paint?

Johnnie must be rubbing off on me. He can't stand anything to be unpainted.

  17. I hadn't caught up with this for last few years, almost back to when you started it, which inspired me to start building a twin Pontiac 1/8th scale 32 model build. The model is still in the beginning stages, but you have made awesome progress.
Big read, and I loved every minute.
For someone that's likely to never see it in person, this thread sure makes me feel involved in a small way.
Congrats on where you are so far with it, very, very cool.
I'll be checking in more regular, as I'm ampin to see it in paint.
Thanks for the ride so far.

The tear down continued today with good and bad discovery's........ after closer inspection of the clutch it needs to go home to 10,000 RPM for some TLC, after 3 years of torturing it quite abit....... found the marine cam gear cracked with a loose bolt. The good news is I have a fresh backup marine "gear drive" thanks to my friend Jim Gracey. The cams both look great .....and I removed the main caps on one of the engines (the one in junking) and found no extreme wear do to the flywheels being directly mated. The good engine is headed for the engine stand for thorough disassembly checking each piece for anything abnormal. I see a garage sell in my future to finance this rebuild :D 1454685_761335307289346_4085222038321698332_n.jpg 10416567_761335333956010_8961794240416834086_n.jpg

Found this video of the TWIN's first pass on NOS @ the Meltdown Drags in Byron. We've since started using the button right from the start to strike the tires. The pas is at 19:20...............

  29. I sure hope the Evil Twin is coming back for 2015, I have my own FED's engine apart for some improvements too... ;)

Actually, the entire Meltdown Drags Association wants the Rocky and crew back!
