I wonder about entering this Hotrod...the exhaust actually looks wicked but colliding with the door and burning ones flesh come to mind. Perhaps being young and carefree you just do the flyin leap...:D

I think just in front of that cage like piping in the center with the blacked out panel...perhaps the cowl was knotched out and foot pedals and stuff was in the engine bay. Kinda crazy to be outside the actual body area but these were a transition to dragsters I suppose. Thats the 32 sedan body that sat on it over to the left.

Heres a link with some info on it...

Cool Link, thanks. My brother was 5 years older than me and he got his driver's license in Texas at 14. That was '54. He was already a hot rodder. He and his friends formed a club in Canyon, Texas called the PLUGS. I can't remember the year but he took me to one of those early NHRA meetings in Amarillo. All I remember for sure is how pretty Dale Hamm's wife, Glynanna, was but I think Wally Parks was there too.

You guys were there in the thick of it. You had eyes and boots on the ground so to speak...and elsewhere it seems...;)...now I want to see Glynanna...

I would love to see some other views of that sedan as well. The wheelwell area is quite interesting on the body...While they are altered racers many modifications can be gleaned and added to Hotrods at street level. There was a lot of wild things going on at these event vehicles.

I was only 9 or 10. She had the attention of all of the teenage hot rodders and I am sure she did as much to boost membership in the NHRA as all of the guys did.
Early day at Amarillo Drag Strip was basic and interesting. I saw two motorcycles and one car run at the same time, passengers in cars, no seat belts, no safety checks, and people already cheating in the stock classes. There were a lot of farm pickups with hay bales for traction. Dragsters with dual truck tires before slicks. Dragsters with no roll bars or square roll bars of welded water pipe. It was crude and exciting and it changed me. :( Strangely I think my young age relegated me to a life in the shop and the pits. I have still never made a legal pass as the driver on a sanctioned drag strip. I have however traveled hundreds of miles a 1/4 mile at a time on public streets doing what the NHRA tried t discourage.

The run what ya brung was probably kinda cool to watch in its own way. Even though you didn't run down the strip perhaps you may have an opportunity in the near future to do just that at a run what ya brung event.

I'm eyeing one such event close to home. Mostly exotic stuff minimal hotrods but just a little pedal to the metal opportunity for myself...as it really isn't like the good ole days.

The ladies...its all part of the ambiance of it all. Its great they are there too. Cool stuff @Six Ball

Stogy, I've seen that tall fellows car somewhere before but can't recall for sure where. It may have been in one of Don Montgomery's books.
