Do the front clips from the circa 1941 coupes fit the earlier (circa 1938) coupes?

    Hello,

When I filmed this elimination race at the all Gas Coupe and Sedan drag race at Lion’s Dragstrip in 1964, there were “pro” photographers standing around all over the place. I had a pit pass, but could not get access to the inner circle, so I was behind the chain link low fence to shoot some racing films.

I distinctly remember this race as it was anticipated as the old versus new. The new being the 33 Willys of K.S. Pittman and the old being the Tahitian Red color Willys Coupe of Big John Mazmanian. The sound of both Willys coupes was loud and made everyone stand up in both sets of bleachers. The anticipation was obviously there.

The one thing I noticed is that those “other” photographers were blocking my view and just standing around. But the angle of the photo from the guy on the ladder was probably the posted B/W photo as it is above the race cars and not at ground level.

This was the advertised event as the top Gas Coupes/Sedans were in attendance. The entry included my friend’s (Atts Ono) debut of his immaculate 1940 red Willys Coupe in B/Gas.

But, as the big time race was setting up, my short movie shows that there was a surprise that the “pro” photographers did not record.

For those that have never seen the Tahitian Red Willys Coupe of Big John Mazmanian run... this is 1964
