yeah im definitely gonna hang on to em cause we get our fair share of snow here in central NY (syracuse) we have a local lake that gets a couple feet of ICE on it here every winter and i am thinking it would be killer to put on a little vintage ice drag event . i'll stud these suckers up and get it done on the ICE or finally make it to a jalopy showdown next year and use em there .

Regarding knobbies and the like... how about rustling up some vintage tractors or other utility vehicles that have implements that would be useful to groom the track periodically, like NHRA does? A hot rod sand Zamboni? Gary

  3. Found the first English language magazine with 2013 Race of Gentlemen coverage. Find it at your nearest Barnes and Noble. Hot Rods and Harleys issue number 4.

    6 pages of pics!

I'm particularly fond of this one, that has my 73 year old dad and I sitting in my speedster (oh yeah, it has Mike Santiago and his amazing 18 car as well....lol)

Kurtis started the Auto Racing 1894-1944 thread here on the HAMB, and posted this '04 legal for Beach Racing Darracq with Authur Rawlinson at the wheel. Looks like the proper '04 tire setup...........1904. Bob [IMG]

That rubber has got to be so hard by now you'd be better off running on just the steel wheels! :D

  8. So the calendars are ready. Look killer!

I hear mine are in the mail. I understand that they will get shipped fast to get them in your hands before Christmas too, but don't delay.

Since we were on the subject of tires, how would a set of old cheater slicks hold up on the sand? One part of my brains says they won't get any traction, the other side says they would be great.

Tread in sand is overrated. It's all about air pressure.

When I was a kid in the '50s we used to go to Cape Cod in the summer. There are huge deep sand dunes up near Provincetown. Now they are Federally protected, but in those days you could drive anything you wanted on them. There were dune buggy companies that would sell rides on the dunes. The vehicle of choice were old woody wagons (2wd) riding on WWII surplus aircraft tires, aired way down. They kind of looked like the old cartoon cars you'd see Mickey Mouse driving!

I'd love to have a time machine and go back and see just how they managed to do that!

I was stationed at Ft. Monmouth, NJ, in the late '60s, and drove a '50 Willys Jeepster (2wd) with cheater slicks. Most of that area is developed now, but during my off time we'd go explore the back scrub pine sandy woods, and those slicks never were short on traction, even when climbing the near vertical sides of a sandpit (of course, you needed a good dose of momentum to be successful, too). :D

  26. You need to submit info on your car for consideration.

That early blown flathead powered Model A would look cool on the sand....

To quote from the Maestro of Motor Mayhem himself....
