The HAMB and Political Correctness

Discussion in 'Questions & Suggestions' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Dec 16, 2007.

  1. I have been a member of the hamb for a quite a while and have witnessed first hand the change to a kinder gentler HAMB,,,,

No zelous intro police,,,heck you don't even need to do an intro anymore.

But lately there seems to be a lot of post vanishing,,,,I have had several post deleted this past year,,,some were not on target,,,but that is seen every day,,,,

I haven't called anybody names or posted porn,,,I could understand that type of behavior being deleated,,

Today I was going to respond to a question ask an it too was ask last night and it had been deleated by a moderator ,,,

The same person ask again this morning what had happened to the post,,,it again was deleated.

Have we come so far and grown so big that with the stroke of a key a guy or gal is silenced if the powers that be deem it so ?

The HAMB is still the greatest car site out there,,,and this is just my opinion,,,but as of late if your opinion is not of the popular belief it WILL be deleated:confused:

This thread will probably be deleated also,,,HRP

yeah, i had an observation about a t-stat housing a couple of weeks ago go poof in the night......
of course it (the thread) coulda took a turn for the worse while i wasn't watching.....

  3. Those of us that have been here for a long time need to help keep the focus going. I have been guilty of piling on as well. Yes, the HAMB is bigger, gone are the days when a pic of a 4wd Camaro would lead to a 5 page thread....................maybe it WASNT better way back!?

I'd imagine those were my posts you were talking about. They weren't controversial or inflamatory, but I suspect there is something going on that I don't know about concerning the person in question. I'll take the deleted posts as a sign not to discuss that person again and go on with business as we usually do.

Has happened alot lately.I was looking for the "Jap truck frame" thread the other day.Seems that it has been deleted. Too bad that some assholes have to turn an otherwise informative thread into a pissing contest to prove they are more patriotic than anybody else. This thread probably wont last either.....

    I dont know man.
only being hear a year(lurked for years b/c I thought you had to pay 50 bucks to join).
It seems most, not all, deleted post have stiring up shit as the main intention.
    for example:
some moron posted a pic the other day of a dude with a mutton chops taking a photo of Boyd.the damn photo was one step below GAY PORN.

I posted saying that people have to stop starting threads like this.
Its obvious that the dudes intention was to start shit.
The people who post such shit need the flaming so they stop.
    ahhh click.

honestly, its hard for me to answer without knowing what threads you are talking about. I will say that we dont delete anything unless it is OT or drama filled.

As we get bigger, I want the place to get more and more on topic.

Example... Your post on DF was deleted because there was already 5 or 6 posts in the last week discussing the same thing. Use the search feature... Thats what it is there for...

I had a thread deleted recently that showed a cool trad new Rudy 3w coupe project for sale on ebay, and it got pulled immediately...yet the thread about the Green Grenade on ebay lives on. Double standard?

I also got a nice little note from a mod saying that I need to improve the "quality of my posts"...

I agree with Ryan BUT the search feature sucks Holmes. I have tried and tried to use it. LAtely it is telling me that I didn't use enough words and I may have 6 words in the search.

I am the king of OT posts, but I never go to political , religious or controversial...no matter how much I would like to. I think with the influx of people into the hobby and the "traditional" scene, will will have to try and do better. Myself included.

The Green Grenade was birthed here on the HAMB. We saw it built right here. Maybe that's why it has stayed and others deleted? Don't know for sure, just saying.

There have been a few posts in the Q&S section from Ryan about using Googles search engine to search the HAMB.

I never have trouble with the search feature... Maybe you are using too many words? I've never tried more than two in any search.

  12. Larry,,this is exactly the kinda stuff I'm talking about,,,both are cool cars,, HRP

  13. Rashy,,,I am no computer expert,,but I too have had trouble with the search button and come up with no results,,,,HRP

What are you searching for and what do you enter in the search?

  15. Well today I was lookin' for the post where the question was ask by Antique engine,,,,,but Ryan answered that question,,,

Sometimes I get all kinds of results when I type in a few words,,,,but sorting out 10 pages of results really is a pita,,,if you know what I mean! HRP

OK Hotrodprimer... I was curious and did a search. Your post history in 2007 (which is very good btw) contains only one deleted thread. What was it about? Christmas elves... I'm sorry man, but Christmas elves have nothing to do with hot rods.

3wlarry, Alliance memberships aren't required around here... and the amount of money given to support this place does not effect your status at all. That would be a double standard.

I wouldn't have deleted your post though. I think that one should have stayed around...

On the search... can you guys give me an example? It works pretty well for me on everything other than short words (less than 4 letters)... It sucks on short words.

The only time search fails me, is when I do something wrong.
If I search "29 Ford Sedan", I know I'm gonna get swamped.
Too much information, such a good problem! :D
So I'd type "29 Ford Sedan 32 frame" or whatever I'm looking for. Narrows it down to a manageable level.

I wonder though, if our search function here uses the "negative feature" like ebay has, where for example, if you put
"29 Ford Sedan -billet" You'd get everything without the word Billet in the article? It only works as long as theres no space between the - and the word you want to delete.

That was the first time I ever felt embarrased to be a Hamber.
Then I thought about how good we all are, and got myself in a better mood.:D

This thread has me astonished... Not in a bad way, but.. just astonished. I feed complaints from both sides - some guys think there are too many OT posts while other guys wonder why their off topic post was deleted when so many others remain.

It's not a science (and not completely accurate), but I have a geek stat that kind of keeps track of troublesome users. For shits and giggles I ran the query on everyone in this thread. Here is what I found:

    1. HotRodPrimer. He was above 90% on topic and had one thread deleted in 2007. That thread was about Christmas Elves and had been reported 6 times before it was deleted.

    2. Druss32. He was 100% on topic (RAD!) and had zero threads deleted in 2007.

    3. tomslik. He was above 90% on topic and had one thread deleted in 2007. The thread was deleted because political subjects started to come up... Essentially, it was the China vs. Mexico Vs. US thing.

    4. Tman. Above 90% on topic with one thread deleted. Thread was deleted because Tman asked it to be...

    5. Antique Engine. Above 90% on topic with 2 threads deleted. One was asking where David Friedburger was... The subject had been a new topic 5 times on the forum in the last 7 days, so it was deleted. The other thread was him asking why his post was deleted. We always delete those.

    6. Mazdaslam. 100% on topic and zero threads deleted in 2007.

    7. 31whitey. Above 80% and zero deleted.

    8. 3wLarry. Below 80% on topic with three threads deleted. The latest prolly shouldn't have been. It was an eBay link to Rudy's latest. Another was his own classified ad that he requested to be deleted. And the third was another eBay making fun of a car found on that site.

    9. Roothawg. Above 90% and zero deleted.

    10. 1950chevysuburban. Above 90% zero deleted...

    ----------------

To be honest, I'm not seeing a problem here... If anything, the stats say I should be deleting more off topic posts. I don't, because some I think are interesting and others just slip by.

Again, it's not a science but we do as best we can.

How is percentage of 'on' or 'off topic' calculated?

Also, how does a moderator come to pass judgement on and leave a message to 3wLarry to improve the quality of his posts? I've seen many, many posts by him that were very good quality. To me that's akin to influencing the writing style of a writer, or doctoring a report to give the desired result to support your point of view. When I read about that, to be frank, it bothered me a little. Is someone sitting around arbitrarily passing judgment of posts, with the poster having no recourse to incorrect/or unwarrented deletes?

It's not a science and the query is actually biased to find "bad" users... Something that nobody on this thread would qualify as at all.

Essentially, off topic posts are labeled whether they are deleted or not. Not as a negative to the user but just so that we have that reference for bad uses in the future... Say a guy makes a thread that is purposely posted to cause trouble or something like that and we check the query to find that he is below 50% on topic. In a situation like that, we can comfortably ban that user.

As for Larry, I'm sure he'll tell ya - we get along fine. And I am more than appreciative of all the great threads he has had in the past... Especially dealing with that '32 of his. I don't think the pm he got is something I feel comfortable about talking in a public forum.

The point of all of this is... Yes, we are getting bigger. We have been getting bigger for 12 years. And as we grow, I delete more and more threads to keep the really good stuff on the top of the page. Cuz frankly, we don't have as much room anymore for the off topic stuff.

I completely understand that some folks won't like this. I gave up trying to be everything for everyone a long time ago. In the end, this is a hot rod and custom forum first and foremost... and that's what is ultimately important to me.

    And to answer your question...

Yes. Absolutely. Unfortunately, there is no black and white here though... Sometimes there are gray areas and sometimes we make mistakes. I think history will tell us though that most of the time, we are pretty damn good.

I understand wanting to remain on topic but if you take away everything thats political/funny/offensive this site will read like a technical service bulletin. :( :( Say the following to yourself in a monotone/robot fashion: I love your new car................That is a beautiful chop..................Danger Will Robinson. Do any of you really talk like that when hanging out with your friends? The threads I like the most are not tech on how to rebuild some thingamawidget (boring). The best threads are the ones when some new idiot registers and posts with both guns blazing about how he's so oldskoolhardcoreratroderiffic because he just took his mom's old Buick Apollo, spray bombed it black/red and added some skulls. Comedy erupts from the far reaches of the universe, the four horseman of the comedic apocalypse are unleashed, pictures of Liberace in his bellytank come out of the woodwork and everyone nearly passes out from laughter. Thats the kind of stuff that happens when normal guys talk in the garage.

Please dont turn the HAMB into a tech site/snooze fest, there are plenty of sites that are devoted to that and guess what...............I dont read any of them and I certainly dont have their t-shirt.

  27. This thread needs more GERM.... acctually, a lot of threads need more GERM

Sorry man, but we have never... and nor will we in the future cater to threads like that.

    Cars... not drama...

In no way are we changing or have we changed the way we moderate... We are doing things exactly like we did 3 or 4 years ago.

  29. Thanks Ryan, the fun threads help break up the day but the tech is what I'm here for. A little humor snuck into a tech thread is always appreciated.
