  3. Great story. What is that watch worth now? I would immagine a 40's era watch in nice condition is still worth something?

When I was 12-13 I was infactuated with Ed Roth. He came to the Lewiston ID World of Wheels and like your Dad, my Dad loaded my Brother and I up in his 56 Chev wagon and droves us down to meet our hero. Roth was amazing and very nice, autograping all the "fink" stuff we drug down. I wrote Ed a thank you letter mailing it to the address on the business card he gave us, and he even sent a hand written reply back! A day I will never forget

must be worth at least the $100 Ryan paid for it... that makes the great story free..... and the memory of a road trip with his dad priceless......

  12. Well, pretty good, made me smile. Your dad must have been a good father. That "shit he pulled" is just the kind of efforts that make kids grow right. Thanks.

  13. I think I remember reading that he got the idea from some ancient Egyptian design he saw.

  14. Great read Ryan! Didn't know your dad was into knives and watches.I bought my first knife at the age of 10 and still have it 60 years later and a "few" more to boot. Now I have to go find a Rotary watch(lol);another passion of mine being watches.

Hey Ryan, you may just have what was the inspiration for his Flying Eyeball. It may be worth more than you think. He probably took the back off of the watch to see why it didnt work, saw the wings and Bingo........ flying eyeball. The resemblance is almost too uncanny.

That knife thing raises interest...I've made a few, from 'kit parts' (blades, springs, pins) and forged some, shaping them on my anvil.
When I hung out for a few days at 'Cars of the Stars' in '75, Ed Roth was there and showed me two knives made by Von Dutch.
Craftsmanship was excellent, engraving superb...but as mentioned, they were heavier than a Buck!
Probably due to Dutch's 'gunsmithing standards'...

  23. Von Dutch knives, ask Von Franco what happened to his.
Having a pinstriper in the family, we run into people that knew Dutch and twice now I have sceen a Dutch knife. They were the prized positions of the owners. On first glance they appear to be crude maybe heavy handed, but the way the blades laid and opened it was beautiful. So was a young man taken advantage off? Maybe, but it was Von Dutch, and he got to meet him. Stories as these keep him alive for the rest of us who only know him in photos and first hand experances.

  24. Oh man, That's a great story.
Can't wait for the next installment

It would seem that if one is not overtly eccentric, one does not receive perpetual notoriety!

Yeah those guys did what they had to to survive and some of it was a little underhanded. I have some similar stories of Tommy the Greek Hrones.
