Yeah it's a shame... But my dad built the engine in 1978 and over the last 30 years it had two light rebuilds so we definitely got our money's worth!

We ended up using cedar with a dark walnut stain because that's what we had in the scrap pile!

Love your car and sorry about the scrap iron issues. I did get a chuckle out of your comment about the disaster coming on "the last run". It would have really been amazing if it was on the next to last run! Thats sort of like when I'm looking for something, I always find it in the last place I look, well......duhh. Like you said though, its a good excuse to build bigger and badder!

  4. Looks like a nice launch on that last pass; the car seems to be really well balanced. It still amazes me that I saw this car once, like 40 years ago at the home of a family friend we were visiting in Irvine, California. I always regretted that I didn't get to see the car run during our short visit there. Your videos go a long way toward making up for that. :D

Hope to see you making a pass with the "big" motor soon.

    Hi, Dimitri.
Yesterday (Sunday) I was back there with my wife Joey. Talked a little with your Dad, observed you picking out pieces...sad ending for a well-tuned 296". Wonderful seeing you, didn't get a chance to say hello to Amy. (you guys were busy!)
Hope you can save most of the stainless valve train!

Maybe ask Chico about one of Chuck Potvin's grinds...he has the machine and the masters.

  6. Well D sorry about the engine but knowing you and Bill this is only a temporary setback, look forward to the next run, and remember that we gave the spectators something to think about, not the fastest but the best!!!!!!

    nother view...

enjoyed the weekend with you all

We have been running stock rods since the 70's.

Seemed to work for us. But for our new motor we will be beefing it up.

"Offerings to the God of Speed". If you are going to blow one up, ya might as well do a good job of it.

Just a thought.... might try 11 gauge material for the oil pan. (yea that is a a sorry example of an inept attempt at humor) I have unfortunately done similar damage to a flathead, although not that many small pieces. Sorry for your loss, (of the engine) it was actually a good race.

    Mike.

The block is toast, lost 4 lifters, the cam, as of right now one rod and one piston. Not sure on the crank yet. It's still in one piece but we have to check it out.

Luckily we already have another block that has been bored, filled with aluminum, four ported, ported and relieved. It's just been sitting for awhile.
