Ed Prout always had Ford powered Altereds, at least as long as I followed his racing. I think that this is a repeat for this thread (or maybe I saw it on "Drag Cars In Motion"), but I wanted to post one of my all time favorite A/Altereds.

This was Bob Newberry's Econo Altered that he raced before going to Alcohol Funny Car.

He was my guru for Ford FE engines. Knew him in early 70's and he had moved up to a blown ford Dragster that was a terror for many years. He lived in a ragged old small appliance shop at the bottom of the Bristol Hill and walked around in a cloud of dust like pigpen of Charlie Brown but he knew his stuff.

On my slightly ot cobrajet I was bumping up at 45 degrees lead all in and didn't want to go farther even while the plugs looked great. He said kid just bump it two more degrees and see how it runs and keep doing that until it falls of or it gets too slow cranking to start.

Bit the bullet and kept bumping it a bit and it kept going faster and faster until the magic number of 50 degrees all in was reached. Nobody would believe that it would work that high until I just said ED told me to do it and they walked away mumbling.

I always thought his name was Prouty?

He later teams up with Al Eckstrum that was partners in the Blown Hearse.

Great story, Loudbang. I always got the "Pigpen" impression, but I loved his cars and they were always competitive when I saw them. Rick

Ron Zavarella's ET Shaker A/A before and after. This car was show quality and quick in both configurations.

When I first started going to Connecticut and New England Dragways, half of the Competition Eliminator fields were Altered Roadsters, of various configurations and classes. I think, though, that there was some aesthetics competition going on at Connecticut because all the Altereds were beautiful cars, i.e. the Zavarella and Prout Bantams, and the D & D Performance T previously posted. The two Super T cars were no exception (obviously an early and later build).

Don't think this was ford powered but can't have enough of it.

New England Dragway A/A's from way back. The driver, and probably owner, of the Odd Job, Chuck Little now races (unless it's a son) a supercharged '63 Corvette Pro Mod car. "Odd Job II" is painted on the rear quarters on the Vette.

This car was the class of the class (A/A) when it was on the circuit.

When the NHRA division race came to New England Dragway during its first sanction under NHRA, and Competition Eliminator was called to the line, this A/A always got everyone's attention. It was quick, fast and went straight. Peter Gallen was the driver, and I think that Rich McPhillips, who now races an A/FD in Top Alcohol Dragster, drove it near the end of its time.

This B/A was the scourge of Division 1 for a couple of seasons. (needed the rain tires the day this photo was taken!)

A lot of these New England Altereds (albeit OT) look very draggy. i guess it proves you don't have to have a million dollars to have a blast.

This car launched like a missile. It looks like the team worked on that based on the 60 ft. time request to the tower on the window. This car was great to watch, running 8.20's at mid-160's. For the era that was really quick and fast for a B/A.
