I've got a th400 and a 350 the 400 I have no drive shaft for + its got the yoke you bolt to rather than a slip in. I've been told they rob HP and I am going to be using a basically stock 350 engine the th350 I have the drive shaft for so it would cost me nothing to use is it worth a little extra expense to install the 400 for daily useage, no racing or real abuse for the forseeable future it is going in a 54 f100 thanks
the th350 is a perfect match for a mild 350 engine, either save the 400 for a more powerful project, or turn it into cash
Sell the 400. The 350 tranny has lighter internals...means less parasitic horsepower loss and better fuel economy. If you upgrade in power you can always build the TH350 accordingly.
thanks squirrel I will use the th350 then you ever get up this way we'll load that 400 into the back of your truck!
sorry dragdoc I must have been scratching out my reply after you had posted, I'll be using the th350 !
I agree with everyone else. I had an A-1 Turbo 400 with a manual reverse valve body and no one wanted it. (free) Everyone wanted a 350 because its lighter and takes less horsepower. A guy finally took it to put in his Suburban.
th400 is great behind a big block, doesn't take much modification to make it hold onto 500-600 hp. Last time I needed a replacement chevy 400 case I had to scrounge and spend some $$$, since then I've been scarfing up any cores I happen upon for a reasonable price
I leaned towards overkill and had a TH400 built for my first car (1969 Chevelle with a mild 350) and it was completely bulletproof...but like many here have said...it's more trans than you need in an application like that! The cool thing about it was the 'self-shifting governor', though! The guy that built the trans for me told me that even if left in "Low" (or 1st gear), it would upshift at about 6200rpm the way he set it up. My motor was built to run up to 6000rpm or so...and that worked out great! Pull the shifter into first, mash the pedal and follow the shift manually after it happened! Can't over-rev the engine that way, and it kept the car real consistent for bracket racing!
My TH350 with a Gil Younger/Trans Go Kit held up just fine behind a stock 390HP 427 in a 62 Impala Convertible and would even chirp the tires into 3rd gear too... I'd stick with the TH350
My friends and I are using a TH350 behind a 700hp alcohol small block. Runs 6.40s in the 1/8 and has held-up fine. Been waiting for it to come unglued all season, but after 150+ passes it's still going strong. In short, it'll work great on a street 350. -Lee www.atomicpinup.com
I broke 7 th350's. I built 1 th400. it's still in there, but I sold it to Buzzard for the Field car. Now I'm gonna see if a muncie is all they say they are.
My 34 has a 350hp 350 engine mated to a th400 and I've no problems with it in the performance category. It was a former drag car converted to a street rod, and isn't always a happy little camper on the street and gas mileage is certainly not it's best feature. If I go to another trans, it will be to the 2004R, a better alternative than either the 350 or the 700R4 in my opinion. Of course my opinion rarely means squat.
For the street, you can't go wrong with either a TH350 or 400.....it's when you start throwing strip type horsepower at the smaller of the two that bad things can happen. Like I said, we've been lucky with ours, but I do have a glide waiting in the wings. -Lee www.atomicpinup.com
