My fathers first car was a 41 Merc 4 dr. I used bondo to mold in the rear fenders of my 47 Merc when I got it in 1967 and now its cracked and looks terrible. How are you going to do it?
I'm not sure how it's going to be done. Miller Metalworks will be molding them and I would imagine that he will be making a piece for the molding. I will post pictures of the process when I get them for the coupe....Thanks for following along
While we are waiting might as well cut up the rear crossmember and get it partially ready for its drop
One way is to weld the fenders, then smooth the radius with concaved steel filler strips. HAMB'er Chad S posted a nice thread HERE: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/tech-molding-in-fenders-on-your-custom.215686/
This is the way we decided to tackle the rear....cut the bottom out of the rear crossmember so the spring will tuck up in the crossmember. A support will be welded inside the crossmember to give it it's strength back. Reverse the main spring and remove the next longest spring.
A fellow Hamber contacted me on a 41 Merc parts that he bought through an individual that had been collecting for a while on 41-48 Ford parts. In this parts stash was some 41 Merc items that I purchased. Needless to say I'm pretty stoked on the purchase....looks to be almost complete set of 4 door trim, complete set of convertible trim, pile of interior arm rest, 2 hood catch panels, nose/hood trim, horn ring, center grill divider, door handles, flove box door w/ clock, hood ornament and a few other misc items
I remember watching the blue sedan on CL for weeks. I live in Frisco and it was VERY tempting to go and look at it but I never made it out there. How much did you end up scooping up the sedan for? I don't recall his asking price but it did not seem too out of line.
This is so cool to watch develop. At this stage, do you plan a similar course of action for the coupe? (I'm sure there will be things learned, with this car as a testbed. Engine choice may also be a factor.)
Thanks Mo....we are getting real close to this sedan sitting on the ground....as far as the coupe goes a similar course of action will be taken. It will run a dropped axle but most likely will receive a parallel leaf setup in the rear. The motor for the coupe is sitting in the garage now...it's a 59 cadillac 390 with an early cast 4x2 setup....
Also work going on getting the skirts to fit right...redo the brackets to securely mount the skirt to fender
Check this shit out...Ken did some wet sanding and polishing on the 41 sedan and this shiny paint was hiding underneath the dirt and dust....now gotta do the whole car
If y'all need your axle dropped check out Kohler Kustoms, shipped, dropped and shipped back in two weeks....
Yep this 4 door wasn't what I expected, really had no intention of doing all this but it's turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
Front end assembled One cleaned up and the other to go the. It's time to start bending some steering arms
Damn. First read wasn't that long ago for me. You're sippin' on some major go juice in Kingswood, my friend. A lot getting done. As well, door count be damned ! I only wish I was so lucky/unlucky/whatever. What a cool car/cars/yeah whatever. It just is. It's good to be you. I like 'em both.
Looking good! The skirts look great....what rubber seal are you using? My skirts are similar aftermarket skirts and I need seals...not sure which one to go with. When you get a second could you let me know...mucho appreciated!
Thanks man....I haven't decided on a seal but when I do I'll post it up. Mo that's some funny shit...lol
