Love the creativity. Don’t care for the way the tonneau fits the cutoff top edge much. As far as nerfs? Alittle over the top. Cool car. You just wonder what happens to these customs…..
Swing and a miss, though I admit I may be a bit jaded or influenced by actual conv victorias. Does have some kool this and thats, doesn't register at all on the chub meter.
Man while over the top I think I’d leave the nerfs alone. To me it really dates the car and makes the rest of the cars choices “make since” it just looks right off the cover of a rodding and restyling little book. Though honestly I came to that conclusion while mentally deleting the nerfs because yeah, they are one step away from being a giant zztop key chain. But it just wasn’t the same with out them.
@Ryan I think you meant he wanted a ’32 phaeton. "Here’s one you don’t see or hear about very often… In 1957, Bernie Stein wanted a ’32 Victoria." I dig the nerf bars myself. I assume with that tonneau cover that the doors aren't functional.
I think the saving grace was the windshield. Coupsters and other roof delete cars' telltale sign is the closed car windshield posts poorly fashioned into an open car style. Sidestepping that all together with a Duvall style windshield was a genius move. Also, I'm a big fan of an un-dropped headlight bar and smaller lights. I dig it, I'd drive it, nerf bars and all.
I see a lot of similar style covers on roadsters and typically the over door section un fastens/snaps out of the way. That being said in some of the photos it did look like the rear door seam May have been filled? Though there is one remaining hinge visible per side
@Tim I wondered about that but this one appears thicker (padded?) and looks like it's one piece. I can see a seam where the two side sections meet the wide rear piece but it looks to be just a seam in the upholstery.
I'm not a big fan of those '50s "custom rods", but for some reason I really like just about everything about this X-Vicky...even the nerf bars.
I saw that seam as well which seems oddly placed. Maybe the door caps lift up and “hinge” at the seam? That seems feasible to me.
The tonneau cover fitment is a little weird, but I wouldn't change anything else, especially the nerf bars!
I'm on the fence, I like the style he was going after but I know I am in the minority, I'm just not a fan of Duvall windshields, IMHO a Deuce roadster windshield would have been perfect. HRP
I saw this X-Vicky at a car show, I think it was in San Jose in 1957-58. I was impressed with it. There was also another top-less Victoria around at the same time. IIRC it was painted black. Another nice car.
I agree. I have friends who don't get the wide whites on my car. It's OK. They just weren't consumed with hot rods and customs at a very early age like I was. There are "55" Olds caps waiting on the shelf to be put on.
A bit off topic perhaps & I don't recall the 80 plus something gents name, & probably not with us by now but recall his channeled 32 sedan for sale in the Sedelia Mo. area several years ago, anyone know it's whereabouts?
King Covers is still in business, now in Fremont across from the Tesla plant. the guy I see driving the King Covers truck doesn't look old enough to be the same guy who did the 1959 job. he'd be in his 80's by now.
