Technical Steering wheel installation

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 60olds98, Jun 9, 2014.

  1. On my '60 Olds I yanked the steering wheel to paint it. I put it back on but it's not centered. Is there a factory mark somewhere that tells me where dead center is?

Should be a little 'dash' mark at the top of the threads of the mast. (steering shaft) The mark should be pointing straight up; if it's not, somewhere along the way the tie rods got adjusted one way or the other.
(that is how to set the wheel straight, by tie rods' adjustment, while setting toe)
It's also possible that the car was hit or 'curbed', bending the sector shaft.

But if the mark is in the center with wheels going straight, the wheel also has a mark, like a center punch divot, right at the top of the splined hole. (at 12:00)
    Check it at Noon...
