I had a goofy idea I have a c3 vette subframe and the steering box looks like it would work on my 50 the vette box should have a quicker ratio I also plan not to have PS on mine this is just an idea c3 box merc box
some folks have used Volvo 140 boxes in shoebox fords http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/tech-volvo-steering-in-a-shoebox-ford.124380/
89 or 90 Cavalier rack is a common swap in a shoebox. Don't know if there is a similar RHD. Might have to change or modify the oil pan for clearance. Rear sump pans are usually too deep to clrar thr rack. There is some info on this on the Fatman sight
It's been many years since I did this but I believe I used 65 up (twin I beam) manual box in one. I had to change the bolt pattern on the frame and sleeve the bolt holes. I also changed the Steering link from top to bottom of Pitman arm. It wasn't difficult at the time and worked out well. The reason for using it was the Long sector shaft and I could use a stock Ford rag joint for the Kool tilt column out if a T-Bird. Hay, that was the 70's guys. Be nice to me. The Wizzard
Great idea, if that meets the OP's goal of 'updating'. Those two steering boxes look like 'father' and 'son'.......amazing similarity. Ray
Funny. I had noticed the similarity also, & was going to check into using that (power) box in my Merc. Has anyone tried this before? I'd rather someone else tried & failed before I do.
the frame dimensions are similar may look into using this clip, it has some huge disc brakes this clip I have has a power assist that bolts to the center link it is rear steer with very little frame past the front xmember like the stock merc
Wow, amazing similarities. I guess it goes to show there are only so many ways to to do a job before your right back where you started. Or 50 Merc's were way ahead of there time. That right there is a Kool discovery. Kind of let's me know I wasn't to far off the mark with this little project I did not to long ago. The Wizzard
