Are you painting or powder coating your wheels? The wheels on the wagon were painted because I couldn't match the color of the body~ The black Deuce has powder coated wheels & grill insert. HRP
I shot mine with Rustoleum satin black 2 years ago. Car has been stored inside and they still look great. But taking the hubcaps off and on chips the paint.
Paint. You can touch up paint easily, powder-coat not so much. Especially if you want to run trim rings or full wheel covers.
Paint for me. I need one early ford 15x5 and one 15x5.5, local. Don't ask me how the hell I wound up with 3 of each...
I haven't got anything powder coated. Not even wheels. I don't know why that is. Maybe it's just too new-fangled for me?
XO Rust brand prime & paint in one can from the farm store. Wheel covers or beauty rings won't stay on powder coated wheels.
Paint the same color as the car on my 63 Impala (avatar). I've got enough money into it without powder coating. Gary
Danny I'm powder coating the ones I got from Dave. Todd and Tammy at C& M are going to do them for me, they do good work. First I've heard of that, I know several friends running powder coated wheels with caps and rings with no problems.
Powder coating. By the time I prime and paint, powder coating doesn't seem too expensive, and hopefully is harder wearing than paint, Maybe cheaper here than elsewhere.
Powder coated on the Corvette, good color matching and durable. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The wheels on the sedan were power coated more than 20 years ago and the hubcaps have been on and off many times with no chips or flakes. HRP
Paint. Removing hub caps will scratch paint or powder coat. So, from an economic view point, it's cost effective to sand and retouch paint, than have a wheel re-coated.
I've "painted" my wheels with off-white Rustoleum paint.....not had any problems.....I usually bang something into them couple times a year with hoses, cords, etc..., and re-touch is easy enough, and still looks good afterwards.
I've done them both ways. The wheels on my '40 p/u are powder coated with full hubcaps..no problem with staying on.
Add a generic hardener, makes a difference. I have even scratched powder coating with dog dish caps before too...
Jim,I have used powder coating quite a bit,the front inner fenders on the wagon were very pitted as was the radiator bracket, the powder coat hid a multitude of sins,I also powder coated the cast iron manifolds and even they appear to be holding up well. HRP
I haven't heard about beauty rings flying off powder coated wheels so much as full wheelcovers. I DO NOT want to be chasing my starfires around on the freeway!!
I think you can get old wheel covers to fit poorly, and fly off wheels, without having to go to the bother of powder coating your wheels. You might even be able to buy new powder coated wheels and new caps and new trim rings, and have them fit poorly. And not even have the powder coating be the cause of the problem. To me, a steel wheel on a hot rod doesn't look right unless it has some chips in the paint. But I'm a bit off kilter.
I have both powder coated and painted on the cars. Basically if they have the color to match then powder coat (it's like $40 a wheel with sand blasting), I can't buy good paint here in California for that price. But if it's a color I have already then it's paint.
