Ok, I have a pretty stock 31 sedan with 19" wires and stock hubs on it now. I ordered a set of smoothies for it and when test fitting for the backspacing and clearences, it looks like the studs are too short to get a lug nut on it safetly. Am I going to have to use a de-swedging(sp?) drill bit and remove the studs then put in longer ones or pound out the original ones then have a machine shop redrill the drums for modern studs? I also noticed that the centers of the drums are larger than the center holes of the smoothies. Could I get the centers cut down to fit the smootie center snuggly which should give me another 1/4 inch or so which would be border line for the lugs. And if I cut the drums down, then you couldn't run the wires again, right? I am in the process of getting together all the parts for the juiced brakes, but The tires on the 19's were shot so I figured if I had to buy new tires, it might as well be www's for the new rims. I think it's time to have a beer and hope that someone can help me out of this.
i'm not trying to be rude here, but is changing the rims ALL you're doing?if you're going to just put some different rims on a stocker, maybe this isnt the board for you...someone might be able to help with your question, though,i'm not sure..i just wanted to see where you were going with this.sorry if i came off snotty creepy
Model A drums are larger in the center than most modern type wheels. Your lugs most likely aren't too short, the wheel justisnt sitting down far enough on the drum. I used modern Ford truck wheels on my A by machining the center hole on the wheel about .5 inch larger, then it sat down on the drum ok and everything worked out. That way 16 inch wires could still be used when the mood struck.
