Hi, I'm building a car using a late model sbc vortec engine from a 1996 full size truck. I'm going with a muncie 4spd and a lakewood scattershield. My issue is the starter that came with the engine won't fit in the bell housing, idk if one of those starters without a nose housing would be the ticket or not. Thought I run it past ya'll, see if anybody had a similar experience and how it was resolved. Thanks in advance.

It's a full size starter, came with the motor, currently raining in my neck-o-the woods so I can't get a picture. So I gm mini starter, like would be found in an 90s 4.3 s10?

    Which scattershield?

    they make more than one

The starter they used on 350s in 1999 is probably what he's talking about.

Go to Rockauto and type the truck you mentioned. You’ll see the starter has been changed over to an earlier one on your engine.

The block saver plate is different than early real Lakewoods. My starter hole is oval in shape. IMG_2795.jpeg

I rmover the block saver to see if it was the issue, it was not. The start nose will no fit in between the flywheel and the bell. I went to rockauto as suggested and the starters shown look like the one I have, I see the design change spoke of, but the nose housing seems to be the issue.

The instruction sheet showed what Johnny Gee showed in post 11. https://documents.holley.com/97140223rev.pdf
You do have the correct starter with offset bolts for the 168 tooth flywheel?

Personally I wouldn't waste my money on one of those aftermarket "universal Chevy starters" there are smaller body permanent magnet Delco starters available for both 154 and 168 tooth ring gears that are oem on later models. Screenshot (282).png

In the next few days I'm going to knock out that knockout and see how the starter fits in it. I have the same scattershield. But I have a small flywheel, and an old style block mounted starter (one long, one short bolt)

I guess I could mock it up on another block...

I don't think you'll run into the issue if you're using the smaller flywheel, but let me know how it works our for you, good luck.

I just flipped over a bare 454 block to mock things up, they have the same back end as the 350. The block plate and a regular starter for the 14" flywheel fit just fine. The scatter shield fits over it fine. No need to knock out the knockout with the large flywheel, but it will be needed for the small one.

Perhaps you could show is a picture of your starter, and where things don't fit, and we might be able to see what the issue is?
