If your looking for a throttle response like a V8 put a 350 in it.

I'm no transmission or torque converter guy, but I tend to agree with Mark Yac. I would be looking for something else first. I'd bet that the '40 pick-up and an S10 would be pretty comparable in weight. Can't recall ever driving a 2wd S10 with the 4.3 but like was said earlier with a 3.06 first gear, there shouldn't be any problem launching it.
    3.06 X 3.45 = 10.56:1 same as a Powerglide with a 6.00:1 rear gear!

I'm curious as to what you find. Would be interesting to monitor the fuel pressure as well as the ignition timing under load.

Im going to have to disagree with some of what has been posted here. While not having a ton of experience with stall torque converters, I built a 416 Ford FE, with iron heads, aCJ cam, Headman headers, S iron intake and a750 cfm vacuum Holley, with a heavy duty C-6 with a 2800 stall converter. It’s in a 3/4 ton OT truck with 3:73 rear with huge 14:35x16.5 tires. It’s a heavy vehile, but feels like it’s feather weight with that combo. Excellent throttle response and a blast to drive. Never experienced any of the negative things mentioned in this thread about converters with higher than stock stall speeds. Just my .02

Edit: it does like gasoline! Lol
