Want to go with some new spark plug wires for my Flathead and not sure what to get. Have heard not to use copper core wires with electronic Mallory distributors and electronic coils, which I have, 12v. I like the clear red wires but they are copper core, can you use them for the plug wires and then use another type to connect the coil to the distributor?

The directions for my Mallory electronic distributer said NOT to use any copper core spark plug wires. I used TAYLOR 8mm Pro series wires. # 73251(red). Install the wires so you don't see the writing on them. They come in other colors.

Brake clean removes the writing with a rag. I like the hotrod company wiring.....

Bubba, does this mean you have had good luck using solid core spark plug wires on your electronic ignitions?

I have had good luck using it. I converted Old Mallory's using Chrysler modules and parts. I found an old spool of the red see through stranded wire and made my own wires. I did it in 1997 before the electronic suppliers said not to use it. As far as I know it is still running fine. I sold the car.

Have you experienced premature failure with stranded spark plug wires?

I had 8 mm wires on my flathead, but wanted a more retro look, and switched to Pertronix Flame thrower 7 mm wires. These are quality USA made black no-name wires that work just fine with my Mallory magnetic-trigger ignition.

Man i dont want to be the one to say "use solid core wires" however we do quite a bit with little or no problems.
I understand the rational thinking in NOT using the solid core units with the electronic interference etc. But there are lots of cars using solid core for sure....

Funny with our flathead we HAVE to use copper core because we have a Harmon and Collins Magneto. But for my Nash straight 6 I'm using The Hot Rod Company. LOVE IT!

I understand what you are saying. I'm just glad that I'm not the only one that has used them successfully. I'm doing a 56 Ford and I just had to have Packard 440 wires and Rajah clips because that was the state of the art back then. I am doing it at my own risk and was just interested in your experience. Thanks.

I have been using the old style copper core wires for a few years, but I have a pertronix wire that goes from the coil to the distributor. Also have a set of 8mm Taylors that are red, thinking about changing the engine color to gold or light tan then using the wires. Going to paint the car this winter a deep blue with either gold wheels or tan color, can't decide yet!

Hello, I just use the 7mm no name black, with the suppressive core. They have worked perfect. The Mallory distributor was the best switch also.

    Tommy.

Is Packard 440 still available? I remember buying it as a kid from J.C. Whitney by the reel and they had the Rajah terminals and crimp tool also. Just haven't seen it anywhere in a long while.

I found an old roll of it on Ebay. That let me cut my wires so that, any one like us that remembers, can easily spot them.:D
