So . . . you want a laptop computer do you?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by C9, Aug 14, 2006.

  1. A local hot rod enthusiast fisherman lost his nicely restored 60 Ford pickup a few days back.
His laptop was in the cab, on the seat from what I understand when it "spontaneously" combusted.
Seems like the batteries may be the problem.
You can read about it here: http://www.kingmandailyminer.com/main.asp?SectionID=13&TM=54000.81

I've seen the pickup at various cruise nights and car shows and it was . . . very nice....:(

Something to be aware of for all of us.
Especially those who travel with their laptops and perhaps store them in warm-hot places.

  2. Bummer about the truck, definitely. The article mentioned that it was a Dell laptop...I know there's a recall on batteries for some of the new models and a recall for the power supplies on some of the older models. Just like cars, it's important to keep up with the manufacturer's recalls on computer equipment.

"Dude, he got burned" :( that sucks big. I've seen some stuff about Dells overheating on blogs before, apparently Dell denied it up to a point and finally issued some sort of recall? That sucks a classic truck had to lose its life due to corporate greed

apparently the airlines put pressure on them due to fears of them exploding on planes

I've heard of them catching fire with aftermarket batteries before, but I hadn't heard of it with factory batteries. Scary stuff.

there's been lots of problems with the "factory" batteries actually being knock-offs on laptops and cell phones in recent history. there was an article about it in some mag i read at the doctor's office in feb. there was one lady who had the cell battery explode in her pocket and burn her pretty bad. you can never be sure anymore...it's all fucking bullshit. i'm still running a pentiumIII and win98, just like i like my cars old and without computers. i'll do as much as i have to to stay up with the tech, and until i absolutely am forced to change i'll keep it that way.
