So who makes the license plate frames for the old styled tag? I am restoring a 36 tag for my pickup and it is a little different size than a standard tag. Anyone making a chrome frame for em?
Hampton Coach has early style die-stamped, steel/chrome plated, license plate frames for old California sized plates (6"x14"), both round & square cornered plates. Bolt holes are 7" and 4-3/4", center-to-center. They are $15 a pop plus postage.
I have the one with the rounded corners, just put it on yesterday, it looks good but I did have to trim the corners of the plate so it would fit. I got mine from Sacramento Vintage Ford .

Hampton Coach's phone number is:1-888-388-8726. Online at www.hamptoncoach.com . Round cornered plate frame is their p/n B-13409-R and the square-cornered frame is p/n B13409-S. I wanted to get one for my '55 New York plate, but the plate is 6-3/8"x13-3/8", so it wouldn't fit right. Stupid states all had different plate sizes, until the car mfgr's stepped in and asked the US government to standardize them. Starting 1957 all plates used in the US had to be 6"x12". All you needed to know, without asking....
Just went to the So-Cal website. The square-cornered plate frames they carry look to be egg-zactly the same as the So-Cal ones and the same price. If you're looking for frames for plates from states other than Cal., remember to check the bolt-hole spacing, since they varied from state-to-stae, too. OK, since I guess I beat this one to death, I'm done !!
GM had an accessory chrome frame in the 40's and 50's that telescoped to fit any size plate. You can get 'em repop for about 40 bucks. Try www.chevsofthe40s.com
. I like the period look of the telescoping type. When you spot them in a flea market they will be collapsed to a much smaller size. Many people don't recognize what they are.
