If you want to get the look of a 36 why not just remove the "curve of a womans back" that was referred to earlier and make the top look like a 36 like this....

    Thanks Swazzie!

HotrodMichelle-I didn't mean you! The more people that say "no" haven't figured out its already done!

Hotrod40coupe- The cut-lines of the chop have already been played out on the rusty one.
The idea was to do the least amount of metal replacement,
on custom style chops the usually the rear corner areas are replaced with less curved pieces.
I showed the multiple '36 pics cause they're profiles are not super streamlined,
they have pronounced curves much like a 40 but with the belt-line. Didn't want to add it.
(was a picture reply to the statement made above it)
If the green one was chopped, it would only be a total of 1.5+- inches,
but the top of the rear windows would probably be lowered to match the heighth of all the other windows,
    maybe an inch or so.
It would be hard to notice it unless next to an unchopped one, and I think it would look good.

Roadsters.com/MLK etc - if I ever decide to chop the nicer one, probably would end up trying to sell it to see if there are any preservationists out there first that would want to "save" it.
Most likely the guys with money though would make a resto-street rod out of it anyway,
replacing the frame with TCI or Art Morrison kits and a CHEVY,
which I think is just as messed up!

I'd rather build something that I like and just have it to drive!

Thanks guys for all the interest~

This is BADASS!!! Like the matranga merc chop that someone suggested. It flows better than stock. Someone needs to build this in real life!

This has nothing to do with anything, but I've read the whole thread, and though I never had an opinion on this before, I didn't see on picture of a chopped forty that I liked. SORRY.

Zed: Model looks great , specially the rear part of the roof. A-pillar and windshield needs some redesign to work. It's little bit too thin.

Janne, exactly what i was thinkin too...A pillar is thin and probably needs to be tiled backwords couple of degrees,to maximazine the flow...
Zibo, sorry to hijack your thread....actually i feel choppin a 39/40 is very hard to improve, and i love to cut cars...but,hey...this is Hamb,so..well done!Stick with your plan, personaly makes things interesting,no matter what...is YOUR car!!!

I think like you, windshield must be slanted a little , don't really look good from the front...

  17. Zed man, that's awesome! I am NOT a fan of cuting up 40 coupes, but that model makes one heck of a case. Of course the thing is, it's not just a chop.

p.s. that's a very nice model by the way.

I would have to agree. I am not big on chopping '39/'40 coupes, but, I'm starting to become a believer; no thanks to that model of Zed's.

    Hi zibo !
Looks like you opend a can of worms , Im all for cutting the top but -40 Ford is a hard chop . First and the biggest problem is the door , a short door never gives good flow so a tudor door or extended door is needed ! post or hardtop ? matter of tast but I bit toying with the idea of 3window much like a -36 3w or a -40 Lincoln zephyr ! There is some attempts on -40 Ford 3w but none with long doors , exept Riks photoshop picture . Also -40 Ford is a heavy front sloper in the roof and this needs to counterd with heavy chop in the back til the arc in the sidewindow is in the center of the door also the top skin top crown needs to be in the center of the door . If all these things were met then I think it be a dynamite look but like many have said dont do it cause it looks no good real fast with failure !

Rik, this car is incredible looking. Does it really exist, or is it just Photoshopped?

Travis, I'm sure you know that this one actually is a '40; I believe it was done with a Zephyr 3W roof.

I think that most '40 chops are a mistake, as are most '36 3W chops, but I think it's clear that it can not only be done successfully, it can be an improvement on the stock lines. This was my '36:

...so I'm sure that if you continue with the care and attention to detail that you've demonstrated so far, you'll do a cool thing.

Incidentally, I saw this car at Paso Maria this year. Although it's been around for years, seeing it next to a stock '40 opened my eyes to the idea that a chopped '40 coupe is not necessarily a bad thing. Notice particularly the rear windows, which I think look better than the stock ones:

Hey 50 I missed all the car shows this summer,
so that purple 40 is new to me I think.
I really like the rear windows and the 40 rear quarters from that rear shot.
Anyone got some other pics of it?

Oh yeah your '36 is/was tits!

    Unfortunately just Photoshopped.

This is how it really looks.

And another small variation in trim and hubcaps...
    Somebody could built this though!

Travis - Here's the 40 we talked about...

It's in the "Hot Rod Kings" book, in Keith Tardell's shop. The story says..."a '40 coupe is undergoing some corrective surgery. The coupe first came to Keith as a restored car. He sectioned it 2 inches, chopped it an inch, and channeled it 4 inches. He put a full cage and all the necessary gear to make 9-second passes. The car did what it was built to do, until it gave the guardrail a smooch. Now it is here in the shop to be brought back to life as a street car."

Maybe someone else has more info on the car.

    Travis,
Scrub Hansen's purple '40 was the cover feature car in TRJ #4 -- waaay back. It's worth your while to find it, because it has a really excellent Ganahl article describing the car in great detail. It's chopped 2 1/4", and the drip rails are molded. There are a LOT of little details in the car.

Thanks. I don't much miss driving it, but I miss looking at it!

Killer! Just beautiful. I personally prefer the first version, but either would be a knockout.
