Photos help a ton in these deals. But with the wide side pan, I am pretty sure you have th early version It didn't take much of a search to find the head casting number listings though http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/chevytalk/GMhistory/1916-57cast.html Scroll down More info here http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/models/engine.htm
Here ya go... look the numbers up. http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/chevytalk/GMhistory/1916-57cast.html '53 head. Ya need the block casting number but I'm betting its a '53 too.
Here's a link to a web site that a friend gave to me to help identify various chevy 6cyls. Go to the 'casting numbers" page located on the left side of the home page. Has a lot of info there. http://www.inliners.org/
Do you have reason to believe it's not the original engine? Whatkind of numbers does the oil pressure gauge read:0-15-30 or 0-30-60? The splasher was a 15 #, the insert bearing engines were 30/60.
Thanks to all who anwsered questions on the '53 Chebie 235 eng, E-Spasel thanks to the Veteran from Indiana. Now that we've identified the mill,,,,,,,,,,,Back to sawin' off the Top! Who's Site isit? That was doin' the Photo series on chopping the '54 Chev?
