1949-1951..........are the hoods all the same??? Mine came unlatched @ 50mph. She is wadded up pretty good. I suppose it can be repaired. Fuck. What do I know. I'm no body man. Christ.....I can't even properly shut the hood. Perhaps I should find a hood? Maybe it'll buff out Give it to me straight. I'll be back in a bit. I'm gonna go be sick now.
49 and 50 are the same,,they have that half circle cut out for the grille,,51 is straight across,,,,,i believe a 51 hood will bolt right up,,if you want to use a 51, you will have to change your grille,,,good time to put in a custom floating grille,,,
I should know this... but I don't. Sorry about the hood David. That car is too sweet to have that happen to it.
You need a '51 hood then. ALWAYS check to make sure the hood is latched on a shoebox before driving it....they are notorious for coming unlatched.
Oh...and that hood can be fixed by a decent metalman. But since you said you aren't a bodyman, it would be cheaper to find a replacement hood than to pay to have it fixed. -Brian
Yeah.....after further review, the hoods look different to me. Especially in the grill opening area. Crap. Folks in Texas, please keep your ear to the ground for a 51 hood. I'll be at the HAMB drags if anyone else has one they can let go of. Thanks kids.
50mph that's nothing. Mine came open at about 75. That is one shitty feeling going that fast and being instantly blinded. I replaced mine at first but did eventually straighten the damaged one. A side note to the story was that the one that came open wasn't even mine. I was borrowing it from my friends woody because his hood was nosed but the rest of the car wasn't finished. I did replace it for him. Brick
Laura kick your ass yet for fucking up her car? You've seen my '51 parts car. You can have the hood off it if you want to make her car a rat rod with rust and genuine dirt road patina!! Check with Dustin, or Rick, I think one of them has a good hood.
"Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it." I'll talk to you more tomorrow. Go have some nightmares about it and it'll all start to get better tomorrow. Yer okay and the car is fixable.
I hope the karma gremlins didnt do this to ya for not returning my call when Laura gets done kickin yer arse give me a call tomorrow yer pard Larry p.s. the ole truck has A/C now
Damn Dave...sorry to hear about the hood, sad for that to happen to any car let alone one so damn nice! Good luck!
My dad taught me to use a small bike lock cable, which when attached under the hood, would allow the hood to open enough to unluck it to get to engine, but gave me cheap safety/security against the hood flying up while driving. Alot of shoebox hoods are tweaked from flying up. It can be fixed by a good metal warrior.
Mine got pretty chewed up also. But my fortune is that the guy who looked at the car before me was at fault and their error cost them 3 grand off of the price of the car.
Dude,, did you throw up on that fender?? I was lookin at our hood latch today,,, looks a little chincy. Gonna do some re-engineering in that area, for sure. I dig the reflection in the dirty fender, Clean it up and retake the pic from the same angle, be a badass wallpaper! Im getting to know a lot of the shoebox guys around here, I'll see if theres a hood floatin around.
Mother F'er.....dude....we need to have a seance for that car to get rid of the demons. That sucks man, I'm sorry to hear this happened. If it makes you feel any better...I got another speeding ticket from the local swine the same day. Mine won't buff out unfortunately.
Oh Man! Hows the rest of the car? No I do not have a good hood I am looking for one or two myself. But like Bellm I also have an old rusty one. I would write Dustin. Sorry, Dave.
I'm no expert by any definition of the word, but from what I found out when trying to locate a hood for my '50, the '49 and the '50 are the same as far as the grill cutout, but the hinges are slightly different. The '51 hood is straight across at the grill opening, and is either an inch longer or an inch shorter then the '49 and '50 (can't remember which). You can make it work, but if you could find a hood off of a '51 it would be much easier. Ben
I'll sell ya the '51 hood I have hanging in my shop. Nosed and peaked in lead with 210 louvers. *Not guaranteed to open at highway speed*
After looking at our safety latch, I assume these fail because of the area that it catchs is not strong enough. Ours was pretty rusty. So I cut a piece of 3/4" angle and welded it in. It was to tall and a little to close to the catch, trimmed the center and cut the tip off the catch, shuts and holds on tight! 1/2" angle would work perfectly, but I didn't have any.
