the car was campaigned out of minneapolis mn The car now is supose to be a street rod, im not sure who what or where, BUT the original gasser chassis is supose to be intact and untouched from rumors ive heard. jeff
heres all the pics i have of it, most were taken by a freind you can see a few changes in time on it, steel wheels, halibrans and americans, stock axle, chrome stock axle, strait tube axle, wishbones then hairpins (im assuming hairpins came with strait tube axle did
Quite a few changes from the original gasser seen in the first photo to the refined version in pic. no.3 with what look like American LeMans flat spokes in front some chrome, paint and lettering. On my iPhone it looks like pic. 3 is dated Oct. but no year. The May '64 photos show the chromed tube axle but they also went to Willys spindles and brakes to save even more weight. In '64 they had gone to a 3/4T. truck floater and Halibrands front and rear too. A beautiful car, and it was a strong runner.
Wow great photo's!!! This was my step dad "Ted Samsel" car, never got to see the car in person but I have seen so many photos and heard numerous stories.
I really appreciated you posting these pictures, as they helped me build up a custom 1:25 scale version of this car for a surprise birthday gift to a son of one of the Samsel brothers. It is modified to look like it did in May of 1964. They had the straightest headers. Right through the fenders! Lol Here are a couple of pictures… It took me a long time and needed a crap load of custom fabricated parts, but I think it captures the car pretty well. Best, Michael Stillwater, MN
You did a great job. I love that you did it as a surprise gift for one of the family members. That’s interesting that you had to make custom parts for it. I would definitely say that you did the car justice.
I remember this car well, as I ran at Minnesota Dragways in the early sixties too. Between this car and the Continental Beacon sedan, these guys had the "middle" gas classes all sewn up! As soon as I saw the title of the post, the name "Ted Samsel" immediately came to mind.
