I'll try to do a better job of translating once I get back from class, but that thing is cool as hell.
Wow, these danged ol Hot Rods are everywhere!!!! Maybe this "fad" might stay around???? Really cool pictures...links...
Beautiful.... Looks to be a pretty large car like Packards in the 30's. Once saw a '32 Packard Roadster and couldn't believe how large it was. Also love the wheels. Are those American Artillary wheels?
HotRodNisse thanks for the cool post!! I hope you did a search on this though, some on here will want to skin you if you didn't. The links to the (I guess) soviet websites are also cool. I saw a picture or two of what would have been the parent car. It was interesting to read in the translation about being built off of "escaped photo's", haha! What do you say we go over to Russia, the new land of "barn finds". The similarities of the cars of that era are also interesting. Here I thought it was just the American car makers spying on each other. There is a couple nights entertainment on this.
Cool car. hard to believe that that came out of Russia in the 40's. (the original not the one pictured)
HotRodNisse ... Cool Find Comrade! ... "Red" cars are the new flat black! So, if I'm reading this translation correctly ... A second car was built in 1940 ... it attained a top speed of 161.9 KM/H (100.6 MPH) ... and from a standing start, it took 35.5 seconds to travel 1 KM (.621 miles).
so what you're tellin me is them Russians did something right afterall... in all seriousness that thing is gorgeous, great find. Really cool background story etc too
Russian Gaz M1/GL1 are basically American Ford, it has produced several Russian cars with American cars as a model !! http://www.abc.se/~m9805/eastcars/showbrand.php?brand=gaz&lang=en http://www.drive2.ru/users/patrick/blog/1729382256910328996/ http://translate.google.com/#ru|en|
It's the same everywhere it's tried. "The Russians" (people) can do anything right if they're left free to do it. Just like here (and especially now), it's when the government gets involved that fucks everything up.
I always thought a GAZ touring car turned into a modified with a hopped up Soviet Jeep banger would be a cool hot rod, but that thing is very pretty. The grille looks ‘38 Chevy to me. -Dave
About 2 years ago I wondered about Hot Rodding in Russia. Even started a thread on it. Any Hot Rodded or Custom Russian Cars... Now this shows up, I knew there had to be some Hot Rodders over there.... and this thing is beyond what I envisioned. Bravo... Thanks HotRodNisse for posting this...
I just finished proofreading and editing the Wiki page about that car on Kustomrama.com: http://www.kustomrama.com/index.php?title=GAZ_GL-1 It's pretty much the same stuff, but I think the translation is a little clearer. Oh...Kustomrama is based in Norway and run by a fella named Sondre Kvipt. He tells me that he plans to be at Speed Week the year (2010.) I've been co-sysop on that site for quite a while and I've never met him. I hope he makes it to the salt so we can meet up. Seems like a kool dude.
