When you look at the masthead of any enthusiast magazine, the names of those who are actually involved or interested in the subject matter stops with "contributors". NOBODY in sales, subscriptions, or management at any level has the vaguest idea of what the magazine content is all about.

This has not always been true. Robert E. Petersen, Tom McMullen, Tex Smith, Ray Brock and a few others were exceptions, founding and/or shaping their magazines and publishing companies on the subjects they loved. And for the time that they were at the helm these magazines and publishing companies thrived.

Why? Because they put the reader's interest first.

When, in the hands of non-enthusiasts, these magazines became "profit centers" instead of "enthusiast-driven" magazines, the decline began. What has happened to R&C is only the logical conclusion of a downslide of management's own making.

They have forgotten the cornerstone of entrepreneurialism: "Give the people what they want and they will beat a path to your door."

    RIP Rod & Custom.

Hell, Pete was gun and hunting guy, not a car guy. But he put passionate car guys in positions of authority and trusted them to produce great content.

Really? My old buddy Holly Hedrich (RIP) grew up with him and was there when his first magazine Hot Rod was started, plus Motor Trend to follow. Sure seems like the Petersen Auto Museum and the millions he poured into it confirms "Pete" was a car guy.
