Features Road Trips

  1. I absolutely love road trips! Pretty sure I have passed that on to my kids as well. I started taking my boys down to LSRU in Austin when they were about two and then took all four kids to St. Louis from Oklahoma about 8 years ago now. We ended up with about a 1500 round trip and had a blast going to St. Louis. Since then, we have done many more and will actually be taking my boys two cars up to Springfield, MO this weekend for the SWMO Hot Rod Hundred. I am anxious to get the motor swapped in my 56 and make a trip to Bonneville one of these years.

  2. Also, looking forward to a possible road trip soon to drive a car back to Oklahoma from Grand Junction, CO. Trips in unfamiliar cars can become the most memorable adventures. :D

Road trips are in the family genes for me I think. As a child we always took long trips every summer to visit relatives all over the country. My reserved seat was the back window shelf of the 53 Olds. Most in my family still have a road atlas within reach most of the time, if only to dream or remember. Once I was driving then it was trips with friends on 2 or 4 wheelers. Then it was for hunting...not animals, junk, all over the midwest to the Rocky's. Now retired, I thought I would wear out lots of tires, but trying to clean up to move out of the frozen swamp, and the price of gas and diesel will cut out a lot of that for me. Dull story, lets hear some more entertaining thoughts from other's !

  7. Best road trip my wife and I made was 2018, for our 20th wedding anniversary. Over 4,000 miles, from southeastern Alberta to Memphis and back. Stopped at Clear Lake, Iowa to tour the Surf Ballroom, and then on to Memphis to see SunStudios and Graceland. Absolutely NOTHING like a road trip in an old car, especially with your best friend riding shotgun! The ol' 56 was our wedding car 7in '98, and then redone for our anniversary trip in 2018. I keep asking her where to next! IMG_0114.jpg IMG_0132.jpg IMG_0140.jpg

What is in the on deck circle (in Grand Junction)?
Hope you have great driving conditions this weekend, hoping to make it to one of the HRH down south one of these days.

  15. Headed to vintage torque fest in 2 weeks. That's about 350 miles round trip. Not bad for the first drive were really going to have in it. And many more after that.
We live for road trips but they are usually by motorcycle. We are riding to SD this summer on the bike. That will be about 3000 miles when all said and done. These things were built to drive. Thrash it dont stash it

  18. Just got home this afternoon after logging about 800 miles on the worn out 56 and my sons OT car over the weekend. Had a great time up in Springfield, MO hanging out with lots of friends and driving the two lanes with a couple hundred mostly pre-65 cars and trucks on the SWMO Hot Rod Hundred.

I love a good road trip. It hasn't been until recently that I've ventured real far with my classics, but for as long as I've had them I wouldn't think twice about taking a 4 hour drive in one direction. Just jump in the car on a whim and go down the shore, down to Maryland or Delaware.... done that more times than I can count.

I ran (limped) my 61 Olds up to Canada for the Jalopy Jam Up a couple years ago, which was an absolute blast. About 1000 miles round trip. It was an eventful trip with the car but one I was glad I took, though it would have been less nerve wracking with someone along for the ride, or with fewer mechanical issues.

Then last year my pal Chris Rusbach and I hit the road west out to Indianapolis for the Custom Car Revival in our 56s, which was a great time as well. That was a little over 1600 miles round trip. Chris demonstrated the practical improvement of an overdrive transmission to me on that trip. But this was a stress-free run without any mechanical difficulties, chowing down on snacks across a few states, humming along with the radio on and taking in the sights.

Looking forward to a Summer with a few more trips like this, perhaps with the wife and kid tagging along for the fun

  25. Another quick road trip coming up this weekend. This one is only about 3 hours each way, but we will take the scenic two lane route. Hoping to drive my car and both my boys cars as well. Heading to Dewey, Oklahoma for the StrayKat 500. There is also a reliability drive that we may try to do Friday for some more driving.

  27. Our trip to Vintage torque fest was great. Even with sloppy front end components the car was great to drive. I feel like I could DD easily and I'm in love with the 3 speed with OD.
