There's 2 different versions of the Red Baron.... One is the BIG 1/12 scale and the smaller 1/24 scale... You'll find the BiG one on ebay once in a while... The smaller one, you could buy that new at any local hobby shop...

Thanks, Deuces- I didn't know they came in 2 sizes. I got the first one as a gift back in '70 or so & ordered the repop from a catalg. When the 2nd arrived I was shocked to find my hands had grown freakishly large.

can't remember the first one, but i clearly remember 'building' the snap together funny cars from circa '74/'75 with help at the age of 5 or so. clearly had a huge influence on my life, built many kits as a teenager, mostly 1/24 scale, and had a few of the monogram 1/8 scale kits, the 't' bucket [offered in red/chrome or black/gold iirc], 78 corvette pace car [molded in orange] IROC camaro [forget what year model that was], and '85 or'87 vette [molded in red] trans am [black] 69 jag. also had a couple of 1/24 big rigs with trailers.

i remember when i was in high school a buddy of mine bought a car carrier trailer and part of the decal kit had 'window stickers', so he built 6 or 7 kits of '70 chevelles and had them on the carrier, was cool as hell.

i said sister because all the parts were the same in both kits.

  8. Yes, that's the 1/8 scale. Mine hasn't fallen apart yet, but maybe that's because I haven't built it yet...:D

I know some of the 2,000 "lurkers" must have some pretty interesting stories about their first models.

My Dad bought me an AMT 3 in 1 '59 Corvette, followed that a while later with the AMT Double Dragster. The Corvette is long gone but I still have parts from the Double Dragster kit.

Thanks Beatnik! I always wondered where all the tooling went for these old kits... It would sure be nice if AMT and Revell started pumping out these old classics again like they used to...

  25. I think my first was the black version of the Monogram "Badman" 55 Chevy - which I notice you can still buy today as a Revell kit with the same decal art and everything. But boy have prices changed - used to be a long row of them in K-mart for like $4.79 a shot.. now you have to go to a craft store or hobby shop and they're $18-$25.

I haven't actually built one in ages, I have this sort of ADD where I get into something then lose interest and walk away - sometimes I come back, sometimes I don't - and the other day I found the two Nascar kits I had just about done, a Bobby Labonte #18 Gran Prix and a Ward Burton #22 Cat Gran Prix - all the hard stuff, the paint (the Cat car you had to mask yourself for the two-tone, I used photocopies of the decals to figure out where to tape it up) and most of the decals are done - the #18 just needed the windows put in I think - and that's where they sit. They were new kits when I started them. Somewhere else I have a '49 Merc kit I chopped with angled posts, extended the quarters like a '51, and used the middle of the roll pan from a '65 Gran Prix kit to give it a custom split nose that I used putty to blend into the hood (have never seen a real one done like it) that is in primer and that's that.

I think though if I could round up a halfway decent AMT annual '59 Pontiac kit I'd build that. I even have a top for one that came in a box of old toys I got at an auction, so I could start with a convertible if I had to. Royal Amethyst with a white top.

In 1967 I was seven and got my first kit... "The Red Devil" by Lindberg. If I remember correctly it was a tall T that I brush painted it gold. I have checked several sites looking for the box art, but no luck yet.
