Has anyone been able to successfully register a car in NY with vintage plates in years where only single plates were produced? NY requires a front and rear plate but there are some years where only one plate was required. Additionally, I'm wondering if a 64 NY plate with the 65 sticker in the corner is good enough for my 65 since there were no 65 plates produced. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
YES, YES & YES My friend has a 65 Corvette registered with the single, black / yellow plate with the red '65 validation sticker on the '64 plate . If the car was manufactured in a year that N.Y.S. issued a single plate, it can be registered with a single plate of that year.
According to the information I have from the DMV, NYS issued one plate in, '01, '02, 1903 thru 1910, 1942 to 1947 also '50, '53, '55 and '64. I have a 1946 Ford Wagon with one plate and had no problem registering it.
To anyone that cares....... DMV never issued plates in 1901-1910 (mid-year). Beginning 4/1901 thru March of 1903, the Owner made his own pair of plates from whatever material was available, and attached or painted the owners' initials on them. Starting in April of 1903 thru June of 1910, the owner was given a circular dash plaque with a registration number and was responsible for making or buying plates (leather, wood, whatever) with that number on it. Lots of these "pre-state" plates were made of leather, since their were a lot of increasingly unemployed harness makers around as the automobile became popular. The first actual metal license plates issued by NYS were in late-June of 1910 and all plates were issued from that time thru 1941.. Not to find fault, but the above list of single year plates is almost complete, but missed 1958 and a couple of other points: Single plates were issued in 1942 and reused in 1943 with the addition of a small metal tab embossed with "1943. Single plates were issued for 1944, '45; '46, '47. 1950 was a single plate. 1953 was a single and used again in '54 with a '54' tag. 1955 was a single and used again in '56 with a tag 1958 was a single and used again for 1959 with tag. 1964 was the last issued single and reused in 1965 with a red decal on the right-hand side of the rear plate. One of my several collections are of NYS license plates of all types, which I have been collecting for 35+ years. If anybody has any questions on NYS plates, I'd be happy to answer them. -Bob
