    Hey all,
What do I need to do to clean out my carb? I think It sucked up some junk from the bottom of my tank. It runs but, not well.....

    Thanks, Mack

Take the carb off, open it up, clean it out, blow out the lines, and put on a GOOD filter!

I have used the old rag over the carb trick very successfully several times. Rev the engine and then smother the carb with a rag while trying to keep it running, I don't let it die, take the rag off before it stalls. I usually repeat a couple times.

  4. Do you not have a inline filter? HRP

Ifn the Belchfire trick doesn't keep everything open in the long run, it just might be time to clean out everything, from the tank, to the filter(s), pump, regulator, etc., for complete piece of mind. Gary

Rebuild carb. Replace those old fuel lines and filters. Flush tank.

could be something in the carb or it could even be something stuck in the lines or a clogged filter.

first thing to do would be a new filter and blow out the lines. then clean out the tank so it does not happen again. Ihad problems a while back with my old Dodge. when I took the sending unit/fuel pickup out of the tank it looked like something from the Titanic. I'm surprised the car ran at all with all the crap in the tank.

  10. Just open the carb up and clean it out, its not brain surgery.

I had an early VW. No gas gauge. You would throw a lever to change to a deeper pick up in the tank. If I ran out at high? speed, the engine would run bad for a while and then clean up. I never knew if it was plugs or valves.

You do realize that you pickup fuel from the bottom of the tank ALL the time , don't you?

  15. This is good enough to get it home, I've had good luck with it though. I still recommend taking the top off the carb (may as well rebuild it..) and put a good inline gas filter in. I like those red Holley can ones with the replaceable filter.

    Thanks All!
It's a new Edelbrock carb with inline filter. The gas gauge is not working. Ran GREAT until I ran it dry. First I'll swap out the filter & clean out the tank.
Good point, it always picks up from the bottom of the tank First.... Wonder why this didn't happen earlier then?
