We lost John Beckett yesterday. From what I've been told, he flipped on the long course, at over 200 mph. John was the former Pres. of the ECTA. He was one of the people responsible for bring Land Speed Racing to the east coast. He was a good guy, very dedicated to the sport. He leaves two grown children. He'll be missed by all who knew him. That is sad to hear.
What with the safety equipment that is required; it must have been a serious accident.
    My condolences to his family.

  6. That is sad news.

I guess, it's better to go out doing something you love.
That would be my choice... if I were given one.

My best to his family and friends.

Terrible news... I heard the crash over the 1610 am radio as I left the salt yesterday, but they hadn't come back on the air by the time I lost reception on the other side of Wendover to hear what happened.

My Condolences to family and friends...

    yes a terrible thing.

our best to his friends and family.

we knew of the crash when we left the salt and racing was stopped. At the motel the folks next to our room had real long faces. We got to chatting with them and the fellow told us his close friend had died in the crash.

Many ppl & the paper called the car a Crosley. the fellow I talked to said it was a Honda. Does not really matter I guess , the fellow lost his life.

Here's the 79 C/GCC Beckett-Jesel LSR car that was driven by John Beckett
Does anyone have any info about what exactly happened?

EDIT: On the SCTA results website they showed the crash at 223.238mph, wow!

we were there at about the two and a half mile mark we watched him go by at over 200 mph.I didn't see the wreck but we heard it on the radio. I don't know what happened. On the radio they said he was out of the car.We thought that to mean that he had gotten out of the car.But thinking back may be he was thrown out of the car I'm not sure.THe crash happened at about 3:00. At around 4:30 they anouced that he died. Man that was shitty it changed the mood for everybody there.I herd a few people talking that night and the next day.It seems he lost a tire or a wheel at 237 mph.
One thing I do know is I saw more spinouts this year then ever before.
