Quick question early 50s back seat brace

There is an off center brace running vertical up the center of the trunk divider wall. I assume its there to support the rear deck lid and package tray.
I can't figure out why its off center and could I remove it and put some 45 degree supports from the inner fenders to the center of the tray or up to the outside of the trunk hindge boxes?
Any thoughts?
