Does anyone besides me remember a guy named August Harcroft? In the late 50's early 60's he raced a white 56 chevy in maybe B or C Gas class at Caddo Mills Texas. I think he was an American Indian and was what some called a pituitary giant. He could lift engines by himself. You could drop a fifty cent piece through his ring. He drove with his left arm out the window, his elbow would be halfway down the side of the door. His hands were huge. Hence the nickname "Hands" He had a very attractive petite wife. Just one of those things i've thought of lately. I cant be the only one on here that remembers this ...can i?
Katfish I remember him saw him several times a Houston Drag Raceway, 1964,65. Watch him try to change the plugs in his 55 or 56 and he could not get his hands to fit between the headers. He was strange but I remember he was nice to me just a 16 year old kid. thanks I had not thought about him in years. j.j.
Well beaverfab, Guess this shows how old we are ,huh? Anyway, glad you remembered and that you enjoyed the little flashback. I had heared sometime back that he was dead. I went to high school with a guy who had that condition,he didnt live that long either. this is starting to be more of a P.M. than a reply to a post. P.M. me if you feel the need. Thanks kATFISH
Not the correct spelling of his last name but I can't remember either. I remember him from Little River in the mid 60s. He had a machine shop in Austin. Met Joe White, out of Austin, @ Roundup a few years ago, he has a beautiful dark blue '40 Ford 2 dr, has a plate under the hood @ front of the car, "restored in memory of August Hartkoptf "(sp?) lists his date of birth and date of death. Joe was a kid in the neighborhood, August souped up his old cast iron Briggs & Stratton go cart motor for him, inspired Joe to be a machinist/engine builder, Joe has lots of cool stories. August was a very talented person, I saw him a bunch @ the drags but never personally met him.
Funny this came up. A friend of mine was talking about riding with him on a pass at Yello Belly. He also ran at Green Valley quite a bit. There are stories of him breaking a shift lever and wrecking his dash on a shift. I also see a Maltese Cross in my head every time someone mentions him (which is still pretty regularly). Off to work. Larry T Just Goggled and found a couple of pretty good threads, gonna read them after work. Thanks.
