If it is a Master and has "knee-action" front suspension, it's probably worn out. As far as I know parts for these are almost imposible to find. When I was in college in the early '60's, a friend of mine had a real nice '38 Master coupe. The knee action front suspension was shot and he couldn't find parts even back then. I spent almost an entire summer with him removing the entire front suspension and replacing it with a straight axle from a Standard. It was held on by lots of rivets, and all we had were hammers and cold chisels. Lots of fun, but it turned out well.

Seriously, check the front suspension to see what it is; a lot of them were replaced.

I would say you are in for thousands of dollars and 100's of hours. Enjoy.

Every old car I’ve ever owned has been a lot of work and a lot of fun and a money pit at the same time.

If you’ve been around the hobby for any time at all then you should know just what you’re in for.

You are in for a LOT of work, spending at least two times more money than you think is possible, and more fun than a box of comic books when it is on the road. Looks like a great project, good luck with your build!

  15. Your in for what you make it. It a lot of work and can get expensive if you get in a hurry. Look around find the deals ask for lots of opinions but build the car you dream of. I would not ever be without some form of a project vehicle or 2 or 4 or 5.

Jetnow1 my problem is my wife will bring home more than I can finish.

Don't be "pulling any triggers" on your new car already..!
It leaves you with a lot of holes to fill and or parts replacement..!

    Pulling the trigger !?!

My dad said those knee action front ends were problematic with just a few years on them. If you went over a rise at speed and unloaded the front end, it would go over center and stay there until you jacked it up got them back in position. I would seriously consider a straight axle from the "lesser" Chevy model.

Early Chevys are a little harder to find parts for but yours looks pretty solid. By the time this car was manufactured most of the wood was gone out of the inside. I like to see early Chevrolets come back to life just because there are fewer of them still around than Fords (I like em' all though). It looks like a great start!

I like your 38 and it appears to be pretty solid. It's a bad name around here, but a Mustang II is a great option for your front suspension. Heitzs, Fat Mans, even Chassis Engineering (now Heitz), has good swaps for the knee action front end. Chassis Engineering (Heitzs) has what you need for a rear end swap, as well as a few others. The engine swaps are endless---- GO FOR IT !!!!!!! Bill

The Dubonnet ("knee action) shocks worked well, but garnered a bad reputation as they usually weren't maintained properly, oil wasn't replenished and things wore out and / or broke. Other bad thing was they were ungodly heavy abd looked kind of......well, ugly!

Saying that, I had the knee action shocks on my '37 Sports Coupe and wound up machining them to accept a modern lip seal. Ran well, with a MUCH better ride that the straight axle on my '37 Town Sedan. Put many thousands of miles on the coupe, driving all over the country over the course of 30-years. I just sold it and regretted doing so as the truck drove down the street taking it to California.......:(

I'd say a lot of fun, some frustration, a lot of hard and not so hard work and spending more $$$$$$$$
than planned. That's okay though if that is what you want.

  24. I installed a M11 crossmember kit in the 38 sedan I owned years back; was built by a company in BC, just can't remember the name right now. Kept the original leafs in the rear, just new shackles, bushing and liner. Rear end is offset from the center pin in the leafs. Long engine bay for later engine fit.

Looks pretty solid; it will be a good project.

  26. ...a lot of these guys are wrong, you can build an enjoyable ride out of that car economically if you really want to;..build it like this one I had years ago;...for about $3000 or less, drove it everywhere...lot's of fun per dollar.

Changed the flat tire, on the rear with a new tire 650 16. Popped the drum, brakes looked good as well as the drum.
Here's a pic of the other side.
