With a stock $200 390 Ford you have already exceeded the displacement of a custom 383" Chevy. There are cost effective aftermarket 4 1/4" stroke cranks out there(Scat, Eagle) that will yield 445 cubes in a 390 block. An FE Ford engine with an aluminum intake is comparable in weight to a small block Chevy. So with the simple swap to the 390 you get 28 cubes or 97 extra inches with the 390 and crank swap. The 350 to 383 Chevy crank swap is kinda pale by comparison. Just the additional cubes with a bit more compression out to pack a good wallop.

I put this 1970 429 in my '56 Ford F-100. (see avatar) Bored .030 over, .509 lift cam, roller rockers, this pic was taken about a month before the first cross country trip. The motor never missed a beat. Between the 429 and the 4 speed top loader behind it the truck was a blast to drive. It would pass everything but a gas station.

No sense in more motor pictures but every street rod I have is Ford powered. Wouldn't have it any other way!

In a 390 you can just run a 428 crank for a 410 or 416 (+.030) or go to a Scat stroker setup from Barry R for a 445, pretty reasonable price

There is a book that just came out and would suggest you pick up a copy from Amazon.com:

How to build max-performance Ford FE Engines by Barry Rabotnick.
    Publisher is Cartech.

The author runs a performance shop that specializes in FE's and he is recognized as the expert when it comes to these engines.

I have a copy of it and its loaded with tons of info by specific parts.
