I installed a Chevy 350 into my '39 Buick. The engine had serpentine belts, I switched them to v-belts. It has a Must II rack and pinion, but the steering feels like it isn't power. I changed the spring inside the PS pump a couple of times to adjust the pressure but it still seems the same. The engine (1989) originally had reverse flow water pump, I changed that when I switched to v-belts, now I'm wondering about the flow of the pump. Are PS pumps directional also?? Thanks
If I'm not mistaken, the pump sends pressure into the box only one way - similar to an electric fuel pump. The second line - which is only held on with a hose clamp - is a 'return' line to the pump for excess fluid. I'm wondering if swapping the hoses into the box might change things? If you're pump is running backwards, it could be 'sucking' instead of 'blowing' fluid into your box. You may need to swap over to a V-drive steering pump to get things correct.
All Saginaw pumps run clockwise as viewed from the front. Maybe you have the hoses on backwards, or got a bad pump. Did you put the valve in backwards when you messed with the spring?
jack up wheels, unbolt ps pump get portable drill with correct driver and spin pump both ways and see if your pump might be for late model only?
Could you fill me in on what the direction of the vave should look like, and what hoses go where so I can recheck them? Thanks
Well the pressure hose comes off the valve and runs to the larger port on the rack. When assembling the pump valve deal, the spring goes in first, then the valve piece. I think there's a landing in the valve to accept the spring.
