Old Ford front crossmembers are prone to cracking in the center. When I first got Henrietta the '38 Ford pickup in 1966, a previous owner had "repaired" a cracked front crossmember by taking off the U-bolts, forming a piece of sheet metal that appeared to have been cut from a large soup can over the crossmember to hold the pieces of the cracked crossmember in place, and hammering the U-bolts down over that and tightening everything up. In the 43 years since then, I haven't seen anything that topped that.
