thanks 340, glad to be back at it........

close up of scabbed together frame inside....before all welded and ground/sanded to pretty up. ( It'll look organic when done)
frame outside looks about almost original, inside is almost not recognizable.

These pictures give me a different view of your steering u-joints. I apologize, I had my head up my butt. Looks like the shaft will slide up in the heim joint and put the support next to the center joint. With the column mounted securely your design should work well. Sorry for opening my big mouth.

no worries, i'm always open for input and thoughts. I've made more than one mistake. like this; made 2 right cutout caps instead of a left and right.............. I should have drilled the stud holes for one on the other side.

    oh well...

few hours spent welding & grinding yesterday and today..... garage is a disaster and i'm ready to be done.

1st picture shows steering mount sunk into frame at an angle pretty well

What disaster, look at all that concrete you have showing. Ha,ha, you obviously don't know what a disastrous shop looks like. Now me, on the other hand.... well, I am personally well aware of the appearance of a disastrous shop.

Stay on it, I'm enjoying every update. I can really appreciate your imagination and skills.

LOL, Yeah your right.... I do keep a pretty clean "pole barn". What I have now is a nice layer of metal dust everywhere. Next warm day i'll open the doors and get the leaf blower out :)

got my front shock mounts and headlamp stands "nickel plated" at a local industrial plating shop. I priced options of chrome, nickel, zinc/tin etc... and nickel on steel parts was within my price range.

it seems pretty hard, I tried to chip in an unseen area and no luck. hard to take good pics with phone, but 1st is without flash, and last 2 are with flash (and no photo editing).... you can see the flaws pretty well, and shine is good. i'm happy as hell

  16. Nickle looks great, at first. It starts to dull after awhile, and the shine is lost.

I'm pretty sure nickel was the plating used when that car was new. If it dulls, polish it. Looks good to me.

  18. If you know of a polish to bring back nickel, I would like to know about it.

  20. From the site you quoted:

"Every time you use a metal polish on nickel it abrades off a thin layer of the nickel.
Rub a little too hard, use a more aggressive polish, or use too often and you'll abrade the nickel right down to the steel."

I know this to be true from 50 year in the machine shop business, machining, and plating all types of metal, with all types of plating. Nickle is beautiful, and has a look all it's own, but it is soft, and will not hold up over time.

Agreed, there ain't no free lunch. Chrome lasts better, but costs like hell. Keep it waxed to keep the air off and it might look good for a long, long time.

  22. Yep, the best you can do with nickel is wax the crap out of it often.

Me and Rex are getting ready for the last test fitting of everything, build Mid-Engine mounts, bla bla bla etc.... Still undecided about using an Aluminum powerglide or a TH350....

I just stumbled upon this thread for the first time. It's sad that cool stuff like this gets gets buried in so much useless shit that gets posted on here.

Great work and creativity! I'll be following along for the duration.

    thanks for nice words....
i'm starting to cleanup my Powerglide, nothing too labor intensive hopefully. Also got a seal/gasket/filter kit to install.
I mounted engine in frame with crankshaft still inline with factory hand crank.

if I wasn't' building a Highboy I would sure have some issues with how low the oil and trans pans are. I have the ability to raise front and/or rear mounts up to 1/2" if needed. that's the good news.

bad news is............ how close the crank pulley is to the front cross-member. I new it was going to be close, and was hoping for at least 1/4" clearance (like the mockup engine was) but it's lucky to be 1/8" :( I guess that's why it's called a test fit, I hate to take more off the cross-member, but I have no choice now....just need to think of a way to keep strength while doing it.

  29. I have owned Model A's with an aluminum Powerglide, and with a TH 350. Go with the TH 350. The extra gear is well worth it.

Amazing build. So inspiring. One of my favorites for sure. Stupid question - with the crank pulley being that close to the crossmember, do you have clearance for a fan once the radiator is installed? On my bucket I had some tight clearances, too. The fan/water pump pulley is about a half inch from the radiator, and I have to run a small diameter fan so it doesn't hit the top tank.
